if ur using references often i like to trace over them with simplified shapes to try and get a good understanding of the pose, and then draw it myself. Tracing over references is extremely useful for learning as long as you do it responsibly lol

the only references i trace are the "hard ones" so like not typical perspective usually. but like i mentioned it looks very unnatural so i stopped doing that 😭 im currently at my warm comfort zone

Alright.
I would recommend maybe a couple pages or sm of no ref pure imagination a week or so and youll just start seeing your work get better, nearly in real time if you do it constantly.

Im not excellent but i can pass for competent and i barely use ref. Literally if i do its a couple things similar to what i had intended.

Also getting better at seeing in a short time. Like if u done speed refs, 5-10 seconds of seeing the ref and then like 5 mins to get a sketch as close to as possible and rinse repeat until you glance at refs and are fully prepared

try out a BUNCH of painting brushes. blending, non-blending, coarse, soft, everything

find one that fits you and stick with it

FRICK YES i lofeeee painterly styles... Imo i would say try to be more loose !!! Have fun!! Have crazy strokes that you wont worry about until later when ur defining them!! Start out BIG and then do smaller details!
