I don't know if anyone will see this, but am i correct to think that regular rich baru ore can be used for smelting? im fairly conviced the difference between focused and unfocused is the ability to sell it.

That much i figured, but i was curious if i could use the normal ones too, when my focus finishes. I was told that the answer is yes

There is no "normal" baru ore. Everything gathered without focus will not be "baru" ore but something else like "iron" ore and cannot be used for smelting

they are however used to make bars and they are used in gear crafting

The gears we craft with non focus mats, are they on par with gear dropped from dungeons and bosses or do they lack in anything?

The gold crafts are stronger than their purple equivalent, but weaker than the gold dropped dungeon equivalent. This is because crafted gear does not have the unique purple stat line.
