I accidentally formatted the ipod via windows when I first plugged it in, from there i tried to reformat it, then my PC started to stop working properly, and now my PC won't recognise the Ipod at all and it has a Red ring on the ipod. Please help as I cannot return this

We need more info to get the full picture. Is it flash modded or original with HDD? Was the battery changed? Do you use the original cable?

Just the reformatting should cause no (significant) harm and ipod is not dead if it shows anything on the screen.
