Just 3:
- Incorrectly connected (to the motherboard)
- broken flex
- broken lock switch.
Chances of motherboard being broken in this way are quite slim.
Correctly connected. Tried multiple new flex / lock switches. This was a problem when I first received the iPod. It appeared to have lots of moisture in it at some time in the past and all the screws were corroded. Cleaned the logic board multiple times with isopropyl alcohol and it worked for a couple of months and is locked again. Still works, it is just locked.
OK, this changes the picture a bit - the corrosion could continue eating the motherboard and finally broke some connections in the lock switch area on the motherboard.
without microscope (or good magnification), experience, probably soldering iron and.... luck - it might be hard to spot the issue.
It can be easy one dirty/corroded pins inside the flex connector, down to corroded paths and vias on the motherboard itself.
