Found an Ipod Video at the thrift store in a grab bag (it was $4, also had a cd cleaner which i needed) but not only is the center button pushed in, it's giving a hard disk error. Upon opening up, I was surprised to see a Samsung drive rather than the typical Toshiba drive.

Current status: Turns on, hard disk clicks twice (i assume its failing to start), gives the hard disk icon, "very low battery", repeat.

#

also the battery works idk why its saying critically low (unplugged it on the critically low screen once and it still did a full cycle)

fluid viper
#

update: the hard disk spun for a moment, but stopped on cue for the disk screen
im thinking the disk is not set up correctly

fluid viper
#

update: fixed the action button (the rubber circle was out of place) and booted into diag mode
im unable to check the SMART data, but the specs are available at least

fluid viper
#

wait i'm cooking

fluid viper
#

ok yeah i've got this nvm

fluid viper
#

update: disk mode works perfectly fine, however booting normally under any circumstance doesn't work

If it is technically OK, you need to make sure it is properly detected in diag mode - 96GB is incorrect size I suppose - check the ribbon? Maybe on the motherboard there are some traces of an issue like burns/water damage?
Plus you can try to do the recovery using iTunes.

fluid viper
#

recovery via iTunes doesnt do anything
the ipod restarts and just goes back to the hdd screen

#

i can check the mobo for damage tho

fluid viper
#

ok so update it doesn't fuck with itunes at all now

#

i opened it up and found that the molex had been adhered to the board
idk if that was from the factory but i lightly pulled it up to reseat it
now in disk mode it only shows up in device manager

warm shadow
#

If SMART data is not showing up and there is no damage in the HDD connection to the mobo - I would consider the HDD to be toast/getting there soon.

fluid viper
#

ok fucked with the cable again and now it appears

fluid viper
#

i'm a little confused because the drive IS accessible

warm shadow
#

You need to check SMART status - drive might be accessible - sometimes whole area even - but SMART will give information why it slows down or that it will soon die because number of migrated sectors is quickly raising (there is dust inside coming from for ex. a headcrash)

fluid viper
#

ah

#

the hdinfo changed

fluid viper
warm shadow
#

Only if you have a ZIF-PATA <-> USB adapter. Probably not worth buying.

fluid viper
#

man

#

ig i should buy a new hard drive

warm shadow
#

There are no new mechanical drives, only new-old-stock.
And if you really want - you should switch to flash using one of the multitude of options: from the most famous and high quality iFlash, down to flash drives and adapters directly from Ali (with unknown prices as of today ๐Ÿ™‚

fluid viper
#

im very aware of iflash but i already own a sony walkman with sd card storage
i like the feeling of a hard drive in my hand

warm shadow
#

Me too, that is why I have both HDD and flash ipods and love them both ๐Ÿ™‚

fluid viper
#

yeahh
this ipod if i get it working will likely stay docked or itll be in my car through usb
im gonna keep trying to get the drive working properly but honestly a used 80gb toshiba drive is only like $25

#

additional note: the ipod doesnt want to charge in disk mode

#

i assume this is because of the hard drive but idk

warm shadow
#

Charging is totally independent.

fluid viper
#

oh
then i might have an issue
im gonna buy a firewire charger after i replace the hard drive

#

it was fully charged last night but i accidentally left the ipod in disk mode for a few hours and then it beeped at me and died
and now i cant get any charge off a charger
i can still run it for like 10 seconds without the charger so the battery seems fine

fluid viper
#

yeahhhh so the battery is cooked

#

i saw it charge on the cable
i unplugged it
it dropped the 2 bars it had within 2 seconds

warm shadow
#

It can start swelling soon if not replaced and start pushing against the screen.

fluid viper
#

yeah ik

#

ill get it out when i get home

#

surprisingly it isnt swelling now despite being virtually dead

#

wait a minute

#

ipods act really finnicky on low battery right

#

lemme replace the batt first

#

yeah i scraped one of the battery pins off somehow

warm shadow
#

Also LiIon batteries do not swell immediately when discharged. It takes a lot of time in case of good quality ones.

fluid viper
#

ok so

  • new battery
  • used 80gb (or 160gb if im feeling it) hdd
#

new shopping list

fluid viper
#

would a 160gb toshiba fit in a 30gb shell or should i upgrade the shell too

fluid viper
#

maybe not this exact one but ill look into it

fluid viper
#

batt is completely fried now o7

warm shadow
fluid viper
#

noted
could i get a link to a recommended replacement batt?
any service is fine, i just dont wanna get duped by a fake MAh rating

also re: the Toshiba 160GB
MK1634GAL fits

fluid viper
#

yippee

fluid viper
#

do the 5th-7th gens all use the same kind of battery?
as in the ribbon goes to the same spot

#

nvm it is

warm shadow
#

Yes, those are identical. Just the fat versions (80GB 5G, 120-160GB 6G) use a bit bigger battery.

fluid viper
#

HIDDEN OPTION C: STEAL THE DRIVE FROM YOUR BROKEN ZUNE

fluid viper
#

(disclaimer: the zune has a bootloop issue that often triggers when it reads the drive, aka not worth my time to fix)

fluid viper
#

now it really is a 30gb ipod

fluid viper
#

now i just need a new battery and its set until i feel like upgrading

fluid viper
#

unfortunately the battery in the zune is not only shot but its also too thick anyways

warm shadow
#

I even wanted to add that ZUNE 30GB uses the same battery, but this is ipod discord server and the batteries fit only thick ipods.

fluid viper
#

on a similar note, getting this little thing replaced with a wider pad so that it doesnt slide off all the time

#

gave the action button to a friend cuz he said he'll make a more permanent solution

#

do the 5th-7th gens all use the same backplates
aka could i order a 7th gen thick backplate

warm shadow
#

In general - backs should be interchangeable among 5, 6 and 7g classic, but of course take into account the thickness.

fluid viper
#

thats the reason i want a new backplate is just to potentially get a thicker one for a larger battery

#

and a new frontplate just cuz

fluid viper
#

new batt ordered, no specific arrival time (its basically any time in the next month)

warm shadow
#

From china? Might take even longer than usual ๐Ÿ™‚

fluid viper
#

yeahh its gonna suck
oh well i have time to do other things now ig

fluid viper
#

battery has come in, installing rn

night flare
#

oh wow it took 2+ weeks for batt to come

fluid viper
#

yep

#

ok so it works

#

one small problem

#

it thinks the headphones are permanently plugged in and the speaker doesnt make any noise even when booting debug mode

shrewd juniper
#

check your headphone jack flex out

warm shadow
#

and maybe time to just clean the headphones jack port?

shrewd juniper
#

it's still a good idea to clean the jack but because the beeper is on the headphone jack flex you should check the connection from that to the motherboard

fluid viper
#

had a feeling

#

kinda abused the hell out of it from disconnecting and reconnecting it so much

#

ordering an entirely new backplate in the future with a new headphone board on it so

#

oh yeah new front plate coming in that an ebay seller is giving me for free to practive dremelling with

fluid viper
#

ribbon connector on the headphone board fully broke, o7
