i recently bought an ipod classic 6th gen from ebay with a working install of rockbox 3.15. everything worked fine. i was eventually advised to update to a daily build so before everything went south it was running the one from 3/21/25.

somehow, while leaving the device unattended and idling for ~45 minutes, the filesystem became corrupt and displayed the screen in the first image. upon booting into the rockbox bootloader it gave an error along the lines of "rockbox.ipod" being missing. i tried installing rockbox again via the windows utility with no success.

upon booting into disk mode, image 2 is what i see.

additionally, the apple devices program on windows cannot recognize my device (image 3.) i have tried reinstalling ipod support drivers (usbaapl64.inf file) to no avail. my version of itunes has no device support. (should i try downgrading?)

i am totally lost. biblio

EDIT: some additional info -- this is an original motherboard with an iflash SD card adapter, 512gb.

this ended up being an itunes issue. had to completely reinstall all drivers and ipod services, then the Unknown Error resolved itself + was able to restore to factory settings

still would love to know wtf caused the corrupt filesystem LOL. i guess we'll never know
