I've got a 5.5 gen classic I'm trying to refurb, swapped an flash quad and a 3800mah battery into it, but when I got to turn it on, absolutely nothing happens. no power, no apple logo, no folder icon or display backlight. Even on FireWire im getting nothing. How long should I leave it to charge before attempting to power it on? If that fails, what sort of symptoms are common with a dead logic board? Is that what my problem could be?

There are multiple possible modes of death of any electronic device.
Here I woudl start with:
- Confirmation that battery is charged (by a different iPod)
- Eye inspection with some kind of maginifaction for seek damages (mechanical and water)
- Check if anything is getting abnormally warm/hot when off, charging and trying to turn on.
been getting the same problem here, noticed when plugged into power/trying to boot the battery gets extremely hot
This suggests a short on the motherboard and here you go into diagnostics with multimeter, some kind of magnification to look for maechanical or temperature faults on the motherboard. In many cases, with prices of the the replacement mobo in are of 40USD this is only for hobbyists 🙂
