So might as well start by doing that and see if the battery has expanded

You can get a new battery for $8 on eoe, but idk about the screen

And if the battery has expanded enough to do that to the screen, I wouldn’t trust it to not go boom in my pocket

They are not that hard to open. I only broke my backplate, but everything else is fine, unlike with more modern iPod Touches that are complicated. This is fine because I can just bend it back.

I don't plan to replace the battery or anything like that for now, since I don't care about that iPod Touch at all. But one day, when the time comes, I'll do that.

That is not the battery expanding, this happens to older LCD screens. The pixels just die sometimes. Only way to fix it would be a new display.
