#iPod boots, gets into disk mode, shows in Finder, but I can't restore

it's a metal-face Classic - can't tell the original capacity or serial - attempting a mod with a 256gb SD card (iFlash Solo, formatted as ExFAT). It appears in Finder (on M1 Max Macbook Pro) but as a blank screen without the option to restore. It does not appear in my Apple Music app.

It does appear in Disk Utility

Zeroing the SD card and trying again has no improvement
