I would focus on roles first, The best starter role you going with is bounty hunter, because it’s the only role that will pay you cash and gold, why the others will only pay you in cash. It only cost 15 gold bars.

bow + varmint + bolt action so you can hunt 3-star animals and sell their carcasses + pelts without losing quality
then I would focus on whichever role you pick first (bounty hunter gives you gold so you unlock other roles faster) and gear for that - for bounty hunter that would be the reinforced lasso and later a bounty hunter wagon
overall, focus more on xp than money - every few levels you get a free treasure map which gives gold + money when you find the treasure
between that and doing missions, hunting and random encounters, you'll make enough money to buy almost whatever you need/want

a varmint rifle is honestly the most useful gun you'll need, it's pretty decent for pve, you can hunt smaller animals with it, shoot down collectables, and sedate. Definitely a must have, the cattleman and the carbine repeater will last you until you get more money but besides the varmint I recommend the pump action shotgun one shot kills most npcs and players if they get close enough.
