The issue with both Gym Leaders and Elite 4 is that basically all of them released before Sprint/Field was a thing. So you have to forgo a 1.5x multiplier if you need the bonus stats on certain stages

Try it out, Ariel. There's no penalty for losing, even if you don't quit until all of your pairs are dead.

The bonus also still counts if someone dies, although you obviously can't use them for the next stage
