Maybe itll stop adults from wiping out hatchlings when they dont even eat them

#

they can still eat them if theyre starving but itll put them at a disadvantage

I think its more strange that nothing comes of cannibalizing your own species. In the real world, cannibalization is discouraged in most animals because its how dangerous diseases are most easily spread (ie; mad cow disease)

Yes and no, it's common for moms to eat their youngs in many species 🤔

(not saying you're wrong though)

Cannibalization is actually quite common in the real world and is seen in over 1500 species, it's most common in aquatic species though.
Notably: crocodiles, predatory snakes, and lizards do relatively often prey on their young.

As annoying as it is, I don't think making hatchlings poisonous to deter cannibalism is something that needs to be done. Rather the growth times need to be adjusted so it doesn't feel as unfair but there's already posts for that

I'm all for hatchling murder when you need food and none else is around, however the large reason why hatchlings are currently being killed is not for food, but simply because "its going to grow up big and potentially endanger one of us" so clans will go around and wipe hatchies simply because they will be a threat later. They don't even get eaten.
