Here's a hot take: we need a few skins of similar quality than gold or shimmer unlockable in-game without paying more for the game, that way gold and it's variants won't be the only thing to pursue...
Putting everything nice with special effects behind any paywall is a great way of manipulating your players into spending, but also sends a negative image of the devs caring only about money
A simple recolor of the gold skins into silver, copper, bronz, or any other metallic color isn't hard to make, as Shade pointed it out "it can be done under an hour"

5 skins (4 if we exclude black) are behind paywall, consequently all their crafted skins are behind paywall as well which are the majority of the skins, if I remember correctly someone already counted how many are there?
Yes there are free skins, but people in any game want to look cool and you can't denie that shimmer and the golden skins are more popular because they look visually more appealing than flat colors, and with the current nesting rates the only reliable way of getting them is by paying for it
Just putting in one unlockable variant which is easier to obitain (not as easy as normal crafteds, but not as hard as gold now) would help a lot with nesting frustration and would help build trust in the players "you want to be shiny? Here you can be this color of shiny, if you want more, pay for it"
Paid skins and costumes in games are fine as long as the in-game ones are of similar quality and currently DoD couldn't have a bigger gap between free and paid content even if it tried
Yes I understand that skins are cosmetic, but as I said people want to look cool in every game they play, and it's a way bigger driving force than you think, and games with the mentality of "you have to pay to look cool" are generally less favored than those who give options for free besides their paid content...

ill be honest with how hard gold skin is to nest right now it pushed me and quite a few other players away from the game. having more skins with the possibility of having those chances would make this so much worse and i personally wouldnt want to play the game

A good way to turn a lot of folks away and burn out many nesters. You shouldn't have to spend weeks nesting 1 person for 1 skin, hours on end. It's less enjoyable and I have spent more time plopping down a nest and just alt tab out of the game to pass the time easier much more than I have before. Plop nest, alt tab, give eggs, nothing? Repeat. You should want your players to stay in game and not need to alt tab because they are burned out.
