For context, I achieved 10A* in May/June 2023 and am now moving on to A levels. However, I am unsure of which subject to study in university. I am considering medicine/dentistry/engineering/computer science. Currently, I have chosen physics, chemistry, maths and further maths at school. Would self-studying biology as a 5th subject be too much of a workload? Thanks.

It would be, as universities won’t take it into consideration anyway

#

For medicine you might need biology for some courses though, I’m not too sure

#

You might want to check some out

#

My friend has Bio Chem Maths for medicine (and so do the rest of my medicine classmates)

i believe replacing phys, math or further maths with bio is a good choice

#

if you want to go for medicine that is

#

for engineering i believe u may need physics idk

If you're going for medicine/dentistry then you should definitely take bio

#

My med school specifically asked for 5 A levels, but I'm pretty sure that's not the case for most universities,

so you can switch either further maths or physics for bio, no need to take 5 A levels,

unless you're interested in a very specific university and their requirements say otherwise

Imo if you want to do bio, I would recommend you to drop further maths. Unless you want to do a maths/physics/engineering course at a really competitive university, it's not really required (but typically appreciated if you have it).

Unis don't give people with more A levels an advantage so I suggest you pick 3 or 4 at max. To go into medicine students normally opt for math's , biology and chemistry and if they do 4 A lvls they just add physics, Its the same for computer science just instead of bio u would choose Computer science and people normally choose chem as a 4th just to open career options. As maybe you might not like AS/AL Cs , keeping chemistry along with physics and math's allows you to do mechanical and chemical engineering. Also considering further math's, further math's is hard and requires a lot of effort in my opinion as well as the fact that it is not required in any of the courses/fields you have mentioned. 5 Alvls is just excess and there is no need of a 5th instead you can give time to other exams like SAT's which are actually considered and required to eneter Unis.
