I only presume this (that the lesson is an “every child born” kinda thing) based off of real life societies keeping their murals and important wall art/writing generally above water levels. It’s entirely possible this Sky society doesn’t necessarily follow the majority of real world examples. I mean they also have flying ships and use fire to open doors which is waaaaay different than any civilization we have in real life.

or rather, the inside of the pipe just ends in a wall -- the pipe itself connects up to the side of one of the side walls of the building that houses the final hallway
i didn't, i just took out a regular candle instead
but i hit a visible wall the birds were flying right through and couldn't follow them further, so i climbed on top of the pipe and kept following it
gets uncomfortably close to the edge of the last krill's patrol range
