I may be confusing myself but usualy carbon based materials turn black when fossilized

exeptions happen with bones and shels, because of calcium

I may be confused tho, it's been 3 years since I had paleontology classes

There are alot of factors on how fossils turns to that, but fossilized and petrified arent really the same

Petrified wood forms when fallen trees get washed down a river and buried under layers of mud, ash from volcanoes and other materials. Sealed beneath this muck deprives the rotting wood from oxygen — the necessary ingredient for decay.

.. I mean this kinda explains the environment conditions are kinda suited for petrification.

And it aint gonna turn black if it aint preserved underground because, well, ancient organic stuffs are fragile against time and elements

but anyway, if you walk on the treetrunk tunnels it sounds like steps on wood

Petrified doesnt necessarily mean the whole thing got turned into stone

It could be just its been wraped or covered in stone

And like i said, it sounds hollow

So im guessing the wood inside the skin did die out and the stone skin remained
