So our theory starts with the narrator being unreliable, especially if they’re megabird and biased against the prince/king (who will be called Alef for simplicity). We made a connection between the story of lucifer and Alef, thinking that megabird, much like old testament God, did not want to give free will to the people of sky and rather control and plan their destinies for them. Alef is against this and thus is kicked out of orbit down to the world of sky. The elders soon follow, since they agree with him.
The 7 of them make it their goal to rid the kingdom of Megabird’s control. This starts with Alef stealing the light and bringing it down to the kingdom, with the power of which they can make the Eden Diamond. Without the light, Megabird is weak, and their powers are weak too which means that their control is not as strong. For a time, the kingdom is free from Megabird’s grasp.
However the light grows to overpower the elders, in their hubris and fight against God they cause the storm. This leads to famines and battles and destruction, and eventually the death of everyone in the kingdom. The light returns to Megabird and using their powers, they banish the elders out of space time, but not Alef. Using the theory of mind-body dualism, he’s put into a new body and most of his memories wiped, and tasked to return the light to the elders, which does nothing but give megabird control of them.
When the elders are given the lights, few of them truly « accept » it. Teth (forest) bashes it with a hammer then turns it into a power source rather than taking it for herself. Samekh (valley elders) literally punt it into the air. Ayin (prairie) turns it into a butterfly. Lamed (vault) has it put in a diamond and yote into the sky.
they know the light is bad, but in the end they are forced to accept it or else face even more isolation.

See as far as I understand it, the elders used the creatures to manufacture their diamonds to power their industry. When they used too much, the light creatures revolted and turned against the elders. Battles occurred which culminated in a big war and battle in Eden where the elders tried to flee, and the giant power diamond exploded which corrupted the lands and the creatures who were caught in the blast (creating the crabs and krill).

There doesn’t seem to be concrete evidence one way or the other, over whether the dark creatures existed before or after the boom. I don’t think either theory is incorrect. Both have solid merit and it’s really fun to explore both ideas.

We're discussing the valley elders and what they have to deal with as punishment

This is my latest theory.

What if the Elders are the constellations themselves, their jod is to watch over humanity and help those who need to be reborn.
But like always, humans become corrupted, bringing darkness to the lands of light. Concerned they decide to fall to the human world and create their own lands, in an effor to help the humans harness the light again and banish the darkness from the lands. They help them build technology and so on, while at the same time creating the things they themselves could not. Like the Eye of Eden, a source of infinite power.
Only this will backfire on them, humans will become more and more greedy, seeking more and more, corrupted they will start a war against the elders, taking their light as they go through each zone, only when they reach the eye the corruption from them themselves and the light from the elders will cause the eye to explode causing the storm.
Knowing what will happen, the apocalypse, the elders took the few humans who still followed them and used what was left of their powers to push pieces of their land into the sky, away from the corruption that will take over the rest.
Sky children were then born of the light, with their only mission being to try to save the eye and with it stop the storm, only non of them succeeded and so, their new mission became to save the spirits of the followers, bring hope back to the elders and return them back home and save the kids who were lost in a futile effort to save what cannot be saved.

Maybe this is a training ground of sorts. At some point megabird realized that the elders had a problem because they never grew up before falling. They were just expected to be Adults from the beginning.

This may be how we are growing up. Granted spirits and access to the elders in their loops so they can teach us what they know, and given incentive to learn altruism, trade, and sacrifice

@strong plume there is a theory that this is a punishment, so it’s meant to be a loop, to constantly repeat as we repent for messing everything up (the theory is that we’re the king, the « bad guy »)
