So here is my take on the lore of Sky. But before I get started, this post will be really long so brace yourself for some reading!
I honestly never thought much about the game's story because I just enjoyed it as the enigma it is. Until a few days ago when I started to make some fanart for Sky. I really like the Elders in this game so I decided to create my very own Elder. As I was drawing I started thinking 'Why is there no Elder in the Eye of Eden?' Every realm has its own Elder that you get to meet at the end except for Eden. And then I thought: 'Wait! Who said there was no Elder for Eden?'
So that's when I started to recall something odd about the Vault-Elder cutscene. In this cutscene, the Vault Elder shows us pictures in the sky, that show every Elder and the realm they lived in. At the end of the cutscene, we get to see one more picture that shows a person we never get to meet. In this picture we can see a figure, that's wearing a crown (at least it looks like a crown to me), sitting in the castle (the one that's hovering above Eden) and a bunch of smaller people worshiping the figure in the castle. So this is most likely the Elder of Eden.
And that's when I remembered the very beginning of the game. At the beginning of the game (when you first start playing NOT when you get reborn) some unknown person tells the player (in a very cryptic manner) about this world's history. And here is what they tell us...
With stars united, our light was infinite.
But darkness blinds, so I cast them away.
Together the stars formed a new home amidst the clouds.
If only they had listened...
Long has passed... but now I call to you
Wake up, my child. Bring the lost stars home.
(I recommend you to rewatch this sequence on youtube and pay close attention to the symbols shown)
Now I believe the Elder of Eden is the one telling us this story at the beginning of the game.
And now I can finally get started on, what I believe happened to this world.
"With stars united, our light was infinite."
All Elders used to live in the sky, with the Eden elder as their leader. The Eden Elder is the one in the middle because she is the leader. (I'll refer to the Eden elder as female from now on. I'll explain later why)
"But darkness blinds, so I cast them away."
When the other elder started fiddling around with darkness the Eden elder turned away from them and banned them from the sky. You can see in this picture, how they are no longer connected to each other.
"Together the stars formed a new home amidst the clouds."
All the other Elders built their own kingdoms amidst the clouds. You can see how the Eden elder is the only one hovering above the clouds disconnected from the others.
"If only they had listened..."
So now all other elders and their stars have vanished (probably destroyed by the darkness). You can see how the Eden Elder (represented by that star in the clouds) is the only one left.
"Long has passed... but now I call to you
Wake up, my child. Bring the lost stars home."
After a long time has passed the Eden elder now finally decided to clean the mess that was left behind. Therefore she creates the children of the light. (In the prairie elder's cutscene we see how he creates a butterfly out of light. So it doesn't seem too far off to me, that the Eden elder would be able of creating children out of light) These children she then sends down to the ruins of the kingdoms in the clouds and orders them to collect the lost stars. All so she can finally reunite with them in the sky, where they all came from.
Now back to why I refer to the Eden elder as female. There actually are no clues given to what gender the Eden elder could be. I simply think of her as female because she is the creator of the light-children (at least in my interpretation of the story) PLUS I like to believe that the female voice we sometimes hear singing in cutscenes is the Eden elder calling to her children.

What if the winged light that you pick up along the way are indeed children just like you but were around back then and because of the darkness they got stuck like that’s why they’re stranded around the 6 kingdoms? Idk this might be canon and I’m just super dumb it’s jsut something I thought of due to @potent copper ‘s theory

wasteland is mid-life crisis, so the emotes there matches the mood. faint, scared, salute

“Boats are mainly for the use of carrying pots of light. You can see these pots of light being made at prairie and I say pots of light because there are butterflies put inside them. In the wave emote cutscene, u can actually see one of the flying boats carrying pots of light.
These pots are being shipped to forest to make power diamonds, they combine the light with organic material at forest and use a diamond press to combine them into an artificial Star, or what we call “power diamond”. You can actually see the concept of this by looking at the forest temple door mural. And I know I’ve been explaining this theory over and over and over again but I’m in quarantine and I got nothing else to do but heres another way of looking how power diamonds are made. This diamond press in the picture is also seen at the golden wasteland, and there’s a krill flying around it. It may be broken down but it is noticeable that it is the same factory. Also the shipwreck at wasteland is seen to be carrying certain pieces of this diamond press, it goes to the top and sides. Now I know there’s boats everywhere and not all of them are carrying pots of light, so I jus assume they are for transportation since the people on the ground can’t fly naturally”
