So. I don’t have much of an idea what the darkness really is yet but
Most stuff in parentheses are the sources, why I think it might be true and stuff
Once upon a time there lived a capeless civilization in the clouds (carvings), and because they were capeless they were weak and could be easily eradicated (end of Eden). Then the darkness came (prologue) to break the peace, and all the elders except for one fell down into the clouds willingly (prologue: “if only they listened” implying they wanted to fall) to split leadership between the 6 elders and organize the land.
Isle elder ruled isle, introduced the civilization to winged light (some ancestors have capes but the civilization in the carvings doesn’t) and fire magic, the basics (temple cutscene); prairie elder ruled prairie and taught them the usage and treatment of creatures of light (temple cutscene), etc etc. They fought against the darkness, but of course all the ancestors are dead, so they obviously lost. Some creatures of light are still alive.
This is where the ultimate elder comes in. You can call them the Eden elder because they’re the only elder we don’t get to see. I believe they’re the narrator of the prologue because they’re the only elder who stayed (prologue scene) and the narrator obviously didn’t want the elders to fall and wants them to come back (“if only they listened” “bring the lost stars home”). And because the Eden elder didn’t hear from the land down there anymore, they made and sent children down into the clouds to bring the elders back (when reborn, the player falls down onto the home platform like the fallen stars which are elders). And we’ve all played Eden, we know it’s impossible to make it through Eden alive.
With no idea what happened to the children, the Eden elder keeps sending more and more children to find out what happened to the land, the ancestors, the children and the elders and bring them back to the sky, but of course no one can make it out alive, report back to the Eden elder and tell them that everyone who tried to complete the mission has died. True, you can save a lot of other dead children with winged light, but they get reborn and sent to the beginning and the Eden elder is still clueless. Which sadly means the children who are all players are doomed to repeat and retry the task forever.

The wasteland looks like a factory, and while exploring it earlier I was studying the structure and debris, and noticed that the walls and ceiling (especially in the area right before the graveyard) have collapsed inward, meaning that they either crumbled over time, or they were destroyed from the outside. 👀
