Normally, Eden runs have you sacrifice Winged Light to free the Fallen who are statues in The Storm. Because these Fallen yield Ascended Candles, they need a way to manage that reward. This is accomplished by removing them from the map once ascended. Reset puts them all back, whichever ones you freed.
This caps the amount of progression possible via Ascended Candles.
For any given time since launch.

After your freed Fallen ascend, I notice the game gives a fraction of an Ascended Candle seemingly for free, but haven't had time or stubbornness to test whether or not that is always given. I presume not, because other "freebies" like touching spirits on the way into the galactic core giving sparks only works I think it's once a day.
From an OCD perspective, it's good that it's a hassle to fetch enough wings to re-try Eden and reach Storm for the chance at that Ascended Candle "wax", because otherwise the temptation would be to endlessly grind Eden, not my idea of a good time.

So I opened the portal and can go in, but my question is if I die does it kick me out/send me back to the beginning of the area? How does that work
