@cobalt lagoon I wonder if the horn is less popular because it used to not work very well. Players most familiar with the instruments (mostly beta and soft launch players) generally know that the horn was not working well in certain ways, and might not have realized it changed.

Some ultra smart people who know stuff about music can tell you which key is which note, but I'm not that smart.

I just use music sheets, which number the keys (Top row is A 1-5, middle B 1-5, bottom C 1-5), and I hit the numbers that are written down.

It changes based on what area you're in though. And sometimes based on what music is playing (which is a little obnoxious, since it means what button is what note can change mid-song)

By any chance has anyone actually mapped out what the notes for music playing in the game actually correspond to? Like right now it’s basically laid out as

A12345 -low
B12345 - mid
C12345 -high

But I’m not a music person, and can’t tell by ear what each note might be. I wanna practice some cover songs 😄 can anyone help?

It's two octaves of a major scale. Keys change depending on the background music, so you'll be better off learning songs independent from key.

You bet. If you're starting from scratch, it'd be worthwhile to spend a little time reading about basic chord construction (major and minor). Once you have that down, you're pretty much off to the races for improvising and covering other songs.

Just try not to get caught in the particulars of note names, keys, etc. The beauty of playing in Sky is it really boils all of that down for you.

#

At some point I'd like to write a guide that serves as a basic intro to music theory within the context of the game. But I have so many things I'd like to do, and end up using my time to play instead 😅

It’s pretty wonderful to play through the game that way once in a while anyway. It really allows the sound design to shine through, and brings a serenity to normally really exciting moments.

What I usually do is stand near them with my instrument out so I can record their notes, and then I learn it later.

@cobalt lagoon The only ones I have memorize are Memory (undertale), Dearly Beloved (kingdom hearts), Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and the first half of the Sky theme.

But I also have Always with Me (spirited away), Once upon a time, Waterfall (both undertale), Lost Woods, Song of Time, Song of Storms, Requiem of Spirit, Prelude of Light (all zelda), and a ghibli song I can't remember the name of written down to play at any time.
