Okay, hearts are the final reward in any of the emote trees. They cost 3 seasonal candles. No, they do not work like normal candles, they're not something gifted by friends. 6 hearts are needed for the final reward, one from each emote spirit. You do need the season pass to get one.

I still think they should've made it more obvious. It's too hidden away, so you can't blame someone for looking somewhere where they wouldn't usually look. I think they should've stated it in the opening cutscene of the season, so people wouldn't miss it.
