For context, I'm a CS major from the Bay Area. While I know GT is more "prestigious" my main concern is that I'll be unhappy and stressed there, and that the hardcore engineering focus at GT is going to slowly destroy my other passions and prevent me from really developing as a person or in any way besides an engineer. I definitely worked very hard throughout high school, but I was completely leadership and community-service driven and wouldn't call myself cracked at coding or academics. UCSD is a pretty good school for CS as well now, and I do also have regents there. For those unfamiliar with regents benefits, I will have priority enrollment for all classes, 4 year guaranteed on-campus housing, and some cool guaranteed research opportunities. I might be scaring myself too much, but please let me know your thoughts and any answers to the questions below would be really appreciated!
- How hard are the classes, and do you feel like you have enough free time outside of classwork to do a lot of other things? As someone who grew up in a very academically relaxed high school, the adjustment is something I’m pretty scared of. (keeping in mind that I’m considering law school so I do want to try to keep a higher GPA, and also want extra time to pursue passion clubs like Mock Trial)
- I’ve heard that GT is like Berkeley in terms of kids being depressed, toxic environment, and just feeling under a lot of pressure while you’re there. Do you think thats true and what would you say the people are like there?
- How would you say the general quality of life is? (campus, food, dorms, surrounding area off-campus etc.) As a vegetarian, can I find decent food options?
- What are your thoughts on San Diego vs. Georgia Tech? My priorities tech-wise are mostly in industry, and then trying to maintain a decent GPA in case I decide to go to law school and obviously just overall quality of life at both schools. Do you think Georgia Tech gives me significantly better recruiting than SD?
