It was the april fools event for the server! See #mod-announcements message

basically being "revived" after being harpooned required a mod to manually revive you, or for a mass revive to happen, so there were a lot of folks who were revived only to instantly "die" (get harpooned) again; and you can't throw harpoons while harpooned.
