#Neuroverse 64: A 3D platformer with Neuro related characters

Hi swarm vedalWave I'm working on the Neuroverse 64 (title is WIP, if you have better ideas, let me know). It’s a 3D platformer with a strong focus on movement. The core mechanic is character switching. It’s very much inspired by A Hat in Time.

Gameplay loop:
You choose a level from the lobby -> complete its story -> unlock a new character and free roam mode -> explore previous levels with new abilities or progress to the next.

The game will feature:

  • Multiple levels
  • Puzzles
  • Secrets
  • Simple combat
  • Different abilities for each character
  • Enemies and Boss fights
  • Character customization

I’m aiming for 7 main levels, each with bonus and challenge stages.
Every character will have unique abilities and customization. My main focus right now is to implement the main cast and then I'll start working on the enemies, puzzles and levels. After finishing the base game I'll also work on adding OVA/spin-off characters like Aquwa, Chrchie, Shoomimi and etc. as playable characters, but until that they'll will appear in game as NPC.

Also about Neuro integration. I'm planning to add it, but I have no idea what Neuro should do in the game.NeuroHuh

Regarding the story part, that is something to think about...

I had a dream regarding neuro and evil being developed further by vedal meaning this timeline is in like a year or 2. In which neuro and evil now are able to hold concerts irl and be really impressive in their own regards compared to other AI's. It was a bit fast but my dream then went on having one of the top mainstream AI's go rogue like grok, openai, gemini or whoever and started to hack into government facilities to accomplish a plan.

Days passed and the AI would reveal the plan to the world. It was something like "do not resist, you will all be governed by me. And if you resist I will use lethal force" and that lethal force would be hijacking government facilities with nuclear warheads, utilities etc.

Then my dream went on to having a few days passing by and many governments and many organizations try and stop this AI and stuff, but wouls not work. This AI kept advancing and becoming faster in hacking into facilities of great importance around the world.

Then my dream went on to going overdrive meaning it went stupid fast by involving neuro and evil convincing vedal to allow them to fight this AI by being uploaded into the internet and fight in there or something like that.

For Neuro to control her character with the Neuro API integration, I think the best course is to make a path node system instead of navmesh for her, its ancient technology but its better for her LLM to understand since its not taht overwhelming, since its basically rails and if she wants to go to a certain objective with more agency, the bot she controls will just calculate the closest nodes to that objective, the only problem with path nodes is that you need to hand place them.

Hi vedalWave , sorry for no updates. I've been procrastinating on redoing characters models and rigs for better animations, but I'm back.

I've been thinking about switching mechanic, and I'm not sure it's good design. If you can switch character at any moment, you might as well just give all abilities to one character. For example, if you can't reach a ledge, you just switch to character who can jump higher. That's one additional input from the player, and I think it can be annoying.

I might be overthinking it, but what do you think? I still wanna have character switching in some form.

i just can't see how it's any different from, for example, using one of the pokemon in your roster for climbing a wall or cutting a bush; or switching the order of your party in an rpg-like game (such as Omori) to utilize the different characters' abilities/skills

it's a mechanic that has been reused by many games, although not all of them have reused it in quite the same form (in the case of pokemon, for example)

I think the character switching (aside from flavour reasons) would have application in terms of platforming or speedy or difficult segments, because when you have to switch, you're locked to only certain abilities at any given time, and have to quickly switch to the right one.

So like, quickly recognizing which ability you need and switching to that fast enough so you don't fall, executing it, then swapping to another, using that, could make for fun fast-paced gameplay

Basically, rather than things being designed around having access to an ability, designing around the fact that you can only have one at a time

(but this is coming from someone who enjoys difficult fast-paced challenges, I know those aren't for everyone, and it doesn't really cover things llike using the computers)

You could have it so you don't start the game with all the characters, or the characters sometimes have to split up and you lose access to them temporarily?

I want to share what has been going on with the game.
First of all, I created a new project. The previous one was a prototype for testing the character switching mechanic, establishing abilities and other features. Now the real development has started.
With the previous project, I realized that chibi models with those proportions are hard to animate, and that my rig sucked neuroCry . So I decided to make new models with a better rig.
After creating the new project, I've been working on background systems, writing story and planning levels for the past couple of months. Right now, there is only Neuro, Evil and Anny in the game and not much content. But now that most of background work is done, I can focus on characters again.

Currently you can:

  • switch character
  • use abilities
  • ledge grab and climb
  • wall slide and jump
  • double jump (after landing the second jump is higher)
  • turn around (when you press the opposite direction you stop and turn around)
  • slide in slopes
  • rail grind
  • climb ladders
  • push boxes
  • walk through door
  • sit on the chair or the floor and lie down
  • bounce from the walls (if you dive into them)
  • get stomped
  • swim (need animations)
  • interact with objects
  • collect collectibles

And there are also abilities: Neuro's air and triple jump, and Evil's sprint and dive.
I just finished Anny's abilities. She can dive, but not as far as Evil, but you can control her trajectory, and she can shoot star that she can bounce on. After 5 seconds or if it hits the enemies, it will explode and deals damage. It also bounces off walls.

I don't really like asking for help, but I'd appreciate any help with the sounds and music, since those are my weak points vedalShy . I can spend hours just trying to find the right footstep sound (and I still didn't found the perfect one) and I don't know anything about music creation. And that's why the videos I post are muted, cause the game literally doesn't have any sounds.
But if you know the good website with free sounds, have sound pack, or found/recorded the perfect sounds for certain actions, please send it here or in my dms. You can use video footage as a reference (if you need more just ask me). As for music I feeling mix of Neuro's and Evil's music with Nintendo style music, but I think making music this early not a good idea vedalNeuroHUH .
I'm perfectionist and can be very picky, so I apologize in advance. Of course everyone who helped will be credited in the game.

My current goal is create a vertical slice/demo. For that I need to add some characters (not all of them) and create a level.

The animations aren't just functional but have personality to them, there's so many great visual effects on movement and actions, the camera seems great, you've got lots of different features implemented already that all look really cool (I know it's just opening and closing a door and pushing a block but they make things feel so alive) it's so good NeuroWow this is amazing
