#Neuro & Evil, on the subject of copyright

I would like to go over copyright for different use-cases in this thread due to multiple projects using or wanting to use material from or made by vedal (& neuro & evil).

Let's get the definition first for all of those looking in this thread, so im covering my basics properly;
" Copyright is the legal ownership of intellectual property such as original works of fiction and non-fiction and conveys the right to control its reproduction and distribution. In other words, copyright is the right to copy. Only the creator of the work can authorize anyone to reproduce the work. ", "The copyright to your original work belongs to you even if you don’t register it with the government. However, you will need a registered copyright if you are bringing legal action for infringement." source

TLDR: copyright is the right to copy, you automatically have copyright on your original works without needing to register it.

Now, at least one project already uses copyrighted material, partially facilitated by resources given out from this server. This would be the RSV project, which makes multiple songs such as the CN edition and now in progress the Japanese edition of LIFE.

In the Neurobot-1000 3D project the community is making an opensource robot version (or at least, attempting to). This once again results in the question; can we use copyrighted material for this?
More specifically, the following material:

  • VOD transcriptions (material originally released by Vedal987 including neuro & evil generated sentences)
  • VOD Audio (material originally released by including the audio neuro & evil generated)

Is this material allowed to be used for different use-cases, and if so, what use-cases are we allowed to use this for? If it depends, what are some general guidelines and who can we reach for clarification?

I understand this isn't a yes/no question, hence the question about some broad guidelines :)
Cheers!

Some possible use-cases which can be used as examples;

  • Copies of LLM's (resulting in the same style of answering questions / adhd brain)
  • Recreation of voice models
  • Creating/translating songs

Sharing clips has been allowed (or at least it has been put as "Are we allowed to upload snippets of the stream on YouTube if we provide links to the original stream?
Yes, you may do so.") so ill leave that one out as example as that has already been answered

technically uploading to YouTube counts as commercial since YouTube puts ads on it and you can earn money from it, also the question doesn't answer specifically the commercialisation of it

good correction, thanks

thought I read that somewhere
I must be the one with an adhd brain

hence asking for broad guidelines and who to contact for clarification :)

I also kind of want to throw in my food for thought since we're on the subject of copyright - song covers

go for it
better to get it out there and give more to think about / respond to rn no?

ok well

#

queenpb said that she doesn't own the copyright to all the covers - which I can make sense of, until I notice nihmune's cover of call me maybe on youtube as a proper monetised song which then gets me confused back around to the karaoke covers

#

and specifically numi's cover, since the instrumental is (to my knowledge & hearing) the original instrumental

#

whereas the other ones have remixed instrumentals

#

and then also neuro/evil sang it so would we have to get permission from vedal for this as well

#

also for clarity's sake: my use case is regarding neurofm + the karaoke archive site we are making

#

I assume the parody remixes that come out every so often fall under fair use actually, but idk how far that goes

#

I think I sound schizo

#

the channel needs to qualify for monetization

#

anything claimed by content id will also take ad money even if the uploader doesnt have monetization

The gamejam team I was on created an original song using the unofficial Neuro and Evil RVCs, and released the song on Soundcloud (not commercialized). We contacted PB about the issue of copyright, and iirc its gonna be mainly up to Vedal

unless I'm wrong, in which case feel free to clueless react me

Yeah if we ever do it closed-source, we would give everything to Vedal (or Neuro if laws ever change by the time the robot is built neurOMEGALUL ). I doubt anyone would disagree with that.
