#A curiosity I had.

I think that could be interesting, just giving them control of all the inputs, and a simple readout of the screen. Might be hard for them to differentiate who is who, and I can foresee a lot of local maxima without a very fine tuned reward system.
But I do really want to see this now. Probably won’t happen unless Vedal is a fan of fighting games, though.

There aren't many things to keep track of. Just record the enemy's position and your own, plus all the bars and that's mostly it. Though I guess that doesn't include time-sensitive info like whether the enemy player just started a special move.
Something that gives me pause is that, when humans learn to play fighting games, we also improve our reaction times. I wonder whether there's an AI architecture that will develop reflex behaviours, without it being egregiously hard-codey. The enemy player can also perform actions at any point, so the AI needs to be constantly considering new data coming in (unlike chess/StS or even minecraft).
🤦 Oh I forgot about how fighting games can come with AIs that are alright, i guess this isn't an unsolved problem
A cursory reddit search suggests that fighting game AIs aren't that good, and a 2021 paper that popped up said real-time fighting was quite hard for current computer agents.

Like I said, it doesn't necessarily need to be Idol Showdown, that's just one I was playing recently so it came to mind. I know there are far simpler fighters out there, which may make at least the idea more feasible.
I wouldn't expect to see this any time soon if it was even considered, either way.
eh i was just using idol showdown to look at the common elements in all fighting games
I mean, don't get me wrong, I'd love to watch them play something like Tekken 8 or Soul Calibur VI, they could even have their own created fighters in the later. But those are definitely probably way too complex. Also Idol Showdown kind of fits because vtubers. So there's that. That might also be why it came to mind. And I do understand you were also using it as just a convenient example as well. Something like BlazBlue could work too, that has pretty simple mechanics.
