Putting this here for visibility and community feedback! hi

Polls were added to Discord out of the blue with no permissions or documentation on how to disable them—if that were even possible. That's pretty bad for us as a large public server, because now there's a larger bit of effort thrust on mods to make sure people don't poll spam. Three or four polls can take up a 1080p display worth of a chat. As a quick workaround, I programmed NeuroBot to auto-delete polls the moment they're sent.

I don't think I need to explain what a poll is, but they're a useful way to gauge interest in ideas, give a clear yes/no to a question, or just have a funny moment. I don't think they would be harmful for the server.

That being said, while allowing polls with no further action probably wouldn't do much harm if people respect the flow of chat and not spam it, we all know that's bound to happen, so I propose we allow it but with a modification to NeuroBot to rate limit it per-channel - perhaps once a minute.

cant you set it so only certain rolls can make polls?

I for one think we should keep them blocked, they feel like they can be disruptive.

I think limiting it once per minute per channel, and like 15-30 minutes per user would be a good balance

but like on the polls section?

If that can be coded, it would be the a great solution

Perfectly possible

i just realised there is no neurobot in this channel so you can make polls here i think

red prism

it'll still listen to messages in forum posts i believe

twilit laurel

red prism

it'll only technically join the thread if it sends a message

@red prism can you send ephemeral messages to people without them starting an interaction first?

It's been implemented, have fun everyone neuroHypers I'll see about getting the rate limit details in the FAQ soon, but:

  • 15 minutes per user
  • 1 minute per channel
  • Embed perms required
