My perfectionism got the better of me so now I am going to make a thread detailing issues with this server's emote names for the mods and how they can fix them. aubrey_neutral_180

Prepare for blabbering.

  • cirno_shrug: rename to cirnoShrug because it's the only emote with an underscore in this server
  • NeuroHuh: rename to neuroWhat to be consistent with what
  • neuroWhat: i guess rename this to neuroWhat2 so it doesn't have the same name as NeuroHuh when it's renamed
  • neuroHuh: rename to neuroLookBoth to be consistent with neuroLookUp and neuroLookDown (and annyLookBoth)
  • neuroHUH: honestly, consider removing this one because it's just not that useful of an emote aubrey_neutral_180 (or you can rename it to something more fitting because its current name does not fit it at all)
  • neuroNyan: rename back to neuroNya because it's kind of silly to rename old emotes just to make room for new ones
  • neuroNya evilNya annyNya: maybe rename to neuroNyan, evilNyan, and annyNyan; though, i'm unsure about whether to use these names because of the reason detailed below
  • hiyoriNya studyNya: i'm on the fence about these ones; i want them to be consistent with neuroNyan and evilNyan, but they're not even cat-themed, so they should be named something else entirely, like hiyoriDance or something, but they wouldn't be able to all follow that naming scheme because neuroDance and evilDance are already taken; i need ideas (for now, they could just be renamed to hiyoriNyan and studyNyan for consistency with the first few)
  • hiyori: remove this and then rename 572943 to hiyori because it's the older emote. Yes, those are two different emotes.
  • neuroSadge: maybe rename this back to neuroSad, and rename neuroSad to neuroSad2 because, again, it's silly to rename old emotes to make room for new ones; plus, it fits what we have already done with neuroPat and neuroPat2
  • comfy: rename to neurosComfy to be consistent with neurosHug and to avoid using the same name as comfy
  • neuroAYAYA: maybe rename to neuroAYAYA2 so it doesn't have the same name as neuroAYAYA
  • neuroPlz: rename to neuroPls for consistency with vedalPls
  • neuroHyperYay: rename to neuroYayHyper for consistency with neuroDanceHyper and other hyper emotes
  • every emote starting with a capital letter: lowercase for the first letter. camelCase.
  • every emote in general: camelCase. Some of them don't separate words with capital letters.
  • neuroBlankies: this emote is named fine; however, the sticker version is incorrectly named neuroBlankie instead of neuroBlankies
  • neuroNotNoted: not a name issue, but this emote is just very low-quality, so it should probably be changed to an HD version
  • POGGERS: Give to him eyes. He is screaming. Save him.
atomic ruin
#

POGGERS he is totally fine i would just take 3 steps away

lean marsh
#

He has no eyes and he must see.

rocky saffron
#

not only inconsistent in name, but in crop

#

the "nya" series of emotes need to be renamed completely, none of them are even "Nya"s, and the original neuroNya she is literally saying Nya

#

The sticker still has the old name too

rocky saffron
#

evilNyaneuroNyahiyoriNyaannyNyathese I would rename as Dance, Yippee, Vibe, and Cheer

lean marsh
#

evilDance already exists

#

though we could do evilDance2 i guess

#

but i feel like these should have similar names

rocky saffron
#

eventually you run out of emote names that fit, it's hard to say

lean marsh
#

yeah that's the issue

#

they feel like they need similar names but the emotes become increasingly different so it's hard to give them similar names

rocky saffron
#

whatever it is, "Nya" definitely isn't working

lean marsh
#

absolutely

#

we can always resort to naming them "neuroKaze" if we can't think of anything cirSlain

lean marsh
#

another thing

#

is this really a "nodders"

#

this feels more like a "nopers" somewhat

#

or a sway or something

humble sinew
#

I am opposed. There is no need for such drastic actions.

#

We are close to the static emotes limit, after that we may have to do a great cleanup.

humble sinew
# lean marsh

I mean, you called for consistency, and now you're questioning it. It is her default and most prominent motion from the osu streams, and previous iterations of these stickers were also from and used mostly when there is an osu stream or they sing a fast paced song.

#

Also, you are opposed to renaming old emotes "to make a room for new ones" , and then suggest to rename an older comfy to be consistent with a newer neurosHug. The emote in question is a version of comfy emote, so it is already consistent.

atomic ruin
#

But they share the same exact name in this case you have provided

rocky saffron
#

I feel like renaming an old January emote like neuroNyan is a pretty drastic change. I would save the Nyan for that one 7tv emote with the Nyan cat if we ever added that here
Also, this set evilNyaneuroNyahiyoriNyaannyNyais all expressing completely different emotions. There's no reason to be "consistent" here just because the same artist drew them

atomic ruin
#

Annytc obviously

humble sinew
#

Consistency is not only about the name, but about the theme and intentions. When I added evilNya, I never knew it would become a series of emotes sharing pretty much the same emotion.

humble sinew
atomic ruin
#

Lets see you are saying that they are consistent in the intention of the author is this correct?

#

Well then the intention of the author as you may know can be Lost in translation making only confusion in the future for not good reason

#

And refering to my case about comfi i have problems because neuroComfy exists wich would've been the better option for sharing the name comfy but in comfy in this case there more diferences than comfy

#

And another problem with this is that people also use the : function making similitudes anoying in those cases

tawny gate
#

Delete all the Vedal only emotes to make more room for Neuro and Evil neuroNODDERS

atomic ruin
tawny gate
#

Also renaming nya to nyan was pretty silly to change but I'll live eliv

humble sinew
atomic ruin
#

But people would know that information in the future?

humble sinew
#

Does it actually matter though?

atomic ruin
#

Then does the name Matter though

humble sinew
#

If this matters, then our current emote library is not consistent at all SCGsus

atomic ruin
#

Because It isn't

tawny gate
#

I think priority should be given to what the emote is used to represent to provide easy access to find it. With how many emotes on are on the list, i have to search by using :

#

I don't really care about sorting by author but if the desire is to credit the author please put the name of the author at the end of the emote name

#

That way it's still searchable

humble sinew
#

Never said that was an intention, but I would love to have the system similar to Twitch's artist attributions

tawny gate
#

Only reason I don't mind neuronyan is because it will appear with :neuronya

#

So i can still find it easily

#

They would be better swapped since it conveys the purpose of the emote better but ill survive

#

It's like

#

Minor

#

I just think the priorities in the naming are in the wrong place

#

Emotes are used ultimately to convey an expression which is what should be the utmost priority in naming

humble sinew
#

evilNya was an unfortunate naming that snowballed.

#

I think most of the people are using favorites feature and/or search (relying on muscle memory to type in the name), so making a very drastic name change is not something that can be done without making people mad.

tawny gate
#

Hmm, perhaps?

#

Idk, the naming on neurocord emotes sometimes is rough so I need think about it since my intuitive thought is wrong on the name. Idk how many times I've looked for NeuroHuh with Neurowhat

#

Perhaps I'm just oldge

humble sinew
#

Same, honestly.

#

There is clearly an issue with the naming, but it is an issue which involves almost a year of the server's history, and making any big changes now would be devastating (or at least very inconvenient for old members). We still have 8 static slots left, so there is no immediate need to make any revisions.

tawny gate
#

I understand the unwillingness to rock the boat neuro7

#

Ty for your time cj

humble sinew
#

To be fair, I am up for rapid and spot changes ("fuck around and find out"), but it is not what a vast portion of members here want or desire.

sharp pivot
#

I agree with gildar here, the names should represent the emotes meaning. Y’all alr changed many old emote names I used (like neuroSadge and neuroNyan). Naming scheme doesn’t matter all that much if it doesn’t match the emote. neuroNya is clearly a yay or yipee, hiyori’s not even a cat, and anny’s a fox.

neon merlin
#

wait does emote name affect anything thosillycat

sharp pivot
near glacier
#

I think this would be a good idea though

neon merlin
#

yeah might be able to search it more easily if the name makes more senseeliv

warm heron
#

a similar thing is happening with 7tv emotes

lean marsh
#

i agree with everyone else on the "Nya" series of emotes, actually

#

they should have different names

sharp pivot
lean marsh
#

renaming it would not be making room for new emotes because it's not changing the name so another emote can have that name

humble sinew
lean marsh
#

oh okay i'm just in too many servers then cirSlain

#

still it's just a bad name

near glacier
#

I feel like tutelSit should be tutelClueless personally, seeing as the purpose it serves feels closer to Clueless than "Sit"

lean marsh
#

true

#

or vedalClueless because the vedal/tutel inconsistency exists

humble sinew
#

vedal/tutel inconsistency exists because of Twitch

#

The channel emotes have vedal as the prefix and they are automatically synced with Discord

lean marsh
#

we still have vedal discord emotes

#

vedalBuff like this

#

vedalCorpa and this

oak arrow
#

you can just remove the anny emote for more space, i don't mind. and annynya is the only anny emote in neuro's server. looks weird using anny emote in neuro and vedal's servers. the people who want to use it can add to their own servers or save it as a gif. about the problem of names, i don't know, if have be a same name, maybe change to yay meow or cheer.

humble sinew
#

annynya is the only anny emote in neuro's server
Which is strange, honestly, because anny is the part of Neuroverse

sharp pivot
#

not a trend we need to start tho, maybe just send the file down to anny’s server or sumthin

humble sinew
#

Only Nitro subscribers will be able to use those

atomic ruin
#

And?

near glacier
#

Animated emotes are limited to Nitro subscribers.

humble sinew
#

Fair

#

That's only for animated though

sharp pivot
#

well there isn’t a non animated ver so i don’t see ur point here

atomic ruin
#

What are you saying i don't get what are you saying

humble sinew
#

I was talking in general, not about the exact emote

sharp pivot
#

?

near glacier
#

But in relation to anny emotes, that's the only one, that's the entirety of anny emotes in this server. That would be talking about it in general.

humble sinew
#

Context is right here HUH

near glacier
#

Okay, but you're talking in hypotheticals there.

#

As of right now, there's only one anny emote and I don't think the emotes should go further than Neuro, Evil, and Vedal, if I had to be honest.

humble sinew
#

On which I've expressed my point of view in my initial message. Idk what's the issue here.

#

Anyway, moving on.

oak arrow
#

well the problem is there is limit space for emotes, and there will be more artist in the server in the future. yes, anny is part of community, but they have their own server, they can convine mods to add emote in their server.

humble sinew
#

Fair as well

rocky saffron
rocky saffron
#

I got permission from the OP of the thread to bring this up, so it's on topic.

Another thing that concerns me is the tendency of some Neurocord mods to steal emotes or make emotes from art the moment they see them, which causes a few issues. It's incredibly disrespectful to the original artist of the emote. The moderator adding the emote has no input from the creator what the emote should be called. The stolen emote is lower quality (right clicking and copying the link saves the emote as 96p, full size emotes are 128p)

I hope the staff can consider asking the artist for the source of the emote (uncompressed) instead of just yoinking it when they see someone use it in chat.

humble sinew
#

That's partially incorrect, btw. When I add emotes, I use the best available quality by changing the size in URL to 4096.

It is not like there is a lot of emotes "stolen" like that, and in the vast majority of cases they are edits of someone else's art, which was posted here at some point.

#

We always ask for permission if we want to add the emote to Twitch, since they are paywalled by subscription.

rocky saffron
#

What if the edit of someone's art, was made with the permission of the original artist?

#

I still believe that asking the original artist, or the person who originally posted the emote for the source, is a small thing to do for a lot more benefits

#

You might also get input from the artist about cropping as well

humble sinew
#

I mean, how does the source help us if we want to add an edit? 4096 is the most quality you can have for an emote, it won't be higher.

Cropping is done by the one who adds the emote based on how it will look in the message. Personally, I've tried to cooperate with artists to improve visibility and line art, for example, but those are the only cases when the art is created specifically for emotes.

rocky saffron
#

Discord compresses images, so if you have the source from the artist, that's the best way to get the best quality for the emote

#

Either way, I am talking about a specific case here

humble sinew
#

It will compress in pretty much the same way, there is literally no perceptible quality loss.

rocky saffron
#

What do you mean by compressing in the same way? Compression adds up over time

#

If you compress an image, download it, and compress it again, the quality will degrade even further

humble sinew
#

There is no perceptible quality loss if you were to do it twice.

#

Or even 10 times. And also, you won't see any difference for such a small image anyway SCGsus

rocky saffron
#

I don't think the issue is perception anyway. It should be the responsibility of a large, official community server, to make sure their emotes are the best quality possible

humble sinew
#

We are talking about literal bytes.

#

Even bits.

rocky saffron
#

I feel like we're getting sidetracked. The main point I wanted to bring up the issue of stealing emotes is, it's incredibly disrespectful to the original artist of the emote

#

Getting the full size source is just a bonus of asking the artist

humble sinew
#

Sure, personally, I won't "steal" any emotes anymore. If people want to have their emotes/edits here, they can post the source in #1095941852068331560 or in #neuro-memes.
If anyone decides their emote needs to be removed or fixed, please reach me out via DM.

rocky saffron
#

Hmm. Alright. But I'm not sure if just posting an art or a meme, is permission to add it as an emote (Unless the artist put emote specifically in the title)

humble sinew
#

In my defence, I can only say that no artists reached us out in order to remove their art from our emote pool. We are always open for a feedback, and, as the main person of the team who works with emotes, will make sure they are sourced correctly with proper handling of permissions.

atomic ruin
#

From now on?

humble sinew
#

From this very moment. For prior emotes, artists can reach out via DM or feedback, as I said earlier.
It was always implied that if you post something here, community can use it for community needs, including community emotes.

rocky saffron
#

I have never posted this here until now. I made this after asking @hardy spear for permission to make the edit. My plan was for our community to hold onto it for three days just so we have something special to us, then provide the source to the mods to use freely. It was stolen in only a day. Neither I or Mashaa were contacted at all about adding the emote, it was straight up stolen without our knowledge.

It really bummed me out, and killed my willingness to create more for this community. I'm not saying delete it now, I think it's too late for that. I just want you guys to think about how seemingly small actions like "stealing emotes" affects us.

humble sinew
#

I mean, it was posted in #livestream-chat (or #neurotic-neurons, cannot remember the details), and people were starting to pay attention to it. It is not quite "holding on". Also, it is an edit of already existing emote neuroHypers, which is months old here, with Discord's default image (this is not to dunk on your creativity or something).

Anyway, I sincerely apologise for this and will do better.

rocky saffron
#

I think it's the intent more than anything, it could have been anything I created. I never meant to claim the idea is super original, at least I'd understand if I wasn't contacted, but Mashaa wasn't either.

Thank you for your apology, I appreciate it. Let's both take this as a learning experience and move on as better people neuroHeart

#

Just to loosen the tension a bit, fun lore fact about that emote, the original name was neuroHypersFish, then someone else with emote perms renamed it Nesus neurOMEGALUL

#

but I think neuroFish is a good name too!

humble sinew
#

I've dig up in the logs, it has surfaced in #neurotic-neurons on 17/11/2023 and added the same day.

rocky saffron
lean marsh
#

we still need to further discuss the naming issue by the way NeuroSip

humble sinew
#

My take on this, feel free to suggest changes.

  • When adding an emote, an effort must be made to obtain permission from its creator via public channels (or in private, if the former is not applicable).
  • Emote name must reflect its intention and expression for better search.
  • If the emote uses another widely recognizable emote as the base (for example, comfy), it should have the same name plus the prefix for the character.
  • Same emote/expression for different character should have the same name (excluding prefixes)
  • If an animated emote is being added, and there is a possibility to have a static emote (for non-Nitro users), both should have the same name, but the animated one's must end with A.
  • If the emote's name is already used or there is no principal agreement, ask the community for their ideas on how to name them.

Character prefixes:

  • vedal for Vedal emotes
  • neuro for Neuro emotes
  • evil for Evil emotes
  • neuroEvil for both

Issues to solve:

  • How to name the emotes of the same intention, like neuroPat and neuroPat2?
  • Do we rename old emotes based on these rules?
  • Do we need consistency with 7tv emotes?
lean marsh
#

sounds mostly good

#

though we should probably add numbers at the end of emotes if more than one of the same name exist

#

like neuroPat and neuroPat2

humble sinew
#

Can we think about this more? Maybe there is a better solution.

lean marsh
#

A better solution to multiple emotes with the same name, you mean?

#

Or just the naming in general?

humble sinew
lean marsh
#

true; the first neuroPat always shows up first in the colon autocomplete

#

i think there comes a point where it can't be avoided, though

#

plenty of servers do it

#

that's the only example off the top of my head cirSlain

humble sinew
#

Well, technically, neuroPat and neuroPat2 are different characters, Hiyori and Neuro

#

I don't have it in my heart to rename emotes with Hiyori though

lean marsh
#

it was made when that was her model, though

rocky saffron
#

on the community we run, those emotes start with neurov1

lean marsh
#

"hiyori" is mainly used to refer to the model itself or the arg character in this server

humble sinew
#

Doesn't work for us, I think

lean marsh
#

in conversations, i mean

rocky saffron
#

Yeah, I associate the name Hiyori more with the crossed out version from the ARG personally

humble sinew
#

Renaming old emotes to hiyori and having new as neuro is the best possible approach for naming, but not for the community.

humble sinew
#

I've added this issue in the pinned post itself, maybe someone else can come up with better idea after a while.

Is there anything else to be addressed?

lean marsh
#

i'll just say that, if you eventually go through with making changes based on those rules in the pinned post, make sure to reread what i've listed in the OP post since the things in my original list have issues beyond what is in those rules

#

like the cirno_shrug emote being the only emote in the server with an underscore, and the existence of both 572943 and hiyori

humble sinew
#

cirno_shrug is a very old emote here, I was not even here when it was originally added. There is no intention to rename emotes for now.

lean marsh
#

as long as old emotes are not being renamed so new ones can use their names, i'm personally fine with renaming old emotes

#

but we can agree to disagree on that for now

#

i feel like we should all be able to agree that we do not need two 572943 emotes

humble sinew
#

Also, there is a question of eventual consistency with 7TV emotes. And I don't even know how to approach that, maybe @warm heron has any ideas about it.

lean marsh
#

yeah, i've thought about that at times, but never mentioned it because it hadn't been as big a concern for me as the other stuff

#

i've noticed stuff like neurosHugA being named differently from neuroHUGGIES on twitch

#

neuroSleep may or may not count because it's a channel emote on twitch

humble sinew
#

Usually, they are not added by the same person in both Discord and 7tv, and they can be added at different times, so there is no consistency on that.

warm heron
#

On 7tv we have emotes like neuroSip and neuroJuice

#

I don't remember the difference between them but I remember that adding a 2 at the end was just seen as lazy

humble sinew
lean marsh
#

yeah i don't think i've ever seen an emote suffixed with a number on twitch

#

except for Clap2

humble sinew
#

That's the same emote reversed, yep

lean marsh
#

yeah

humble sinew
#

Do we even need consistency with 7tv though? 7tv emotes are very much crowd-sourced, unlike in Discord where they are hand-picked and cropped by mods.

lean marsh
#

may i suggest that we undo the naming changes done to neuroSadge and neuroNyan now and delete the hiyori emote since these were all relatively recent changes and won't have as great of an impact as changing older emote names; plus, it's better to undo these changes sooner so persons do not become used to them
(or at the very least just delete hiyori)

rocky saffron
#

schizdalvedalschizo as well

lean marsh
#

plus, it frees up slots

warm heron
#

What is the issue with hiyori and vedalschizo

lean marsh
#

These are four different emotes.

#

That's the issue.

warm heron
#

Oh they are duplicates

lean marsh
#

yes

#

Emote names/management

#

this seems like a more fitting name at this point

hardy spear
lean marsh
#

... so are those duplicates going to be removed

humble sinew
#

We don't have plans to change anything just yet, there are things that have more priority for now.

lean marsh
#

hardy spear
#

I'll say keep em.. i still find them golden neuroKufufu

Updates since last activity here (specifically, the ones of which I am aware):

  • cirno_shrug has been removed
  • 572943 has been removed
  • comfy (the non-Neuro one) has been removed
  • POGGERS has been removed
