Hey!

I have a friend who wants to get into commander, and requested a simple to play graveyard recursion themed deck. My mind instantly went to meren, but this isn’t my usual colors/archetype so I’m not sure if I’m missing if anything obvious in my deck building here. Trying to keep it chill bracket 2 / low 3. Here’s my list, any advice would be great!!

Man, remind me to get on your good side. This is way better then a deck I would build for my friends 😂

Deck looks good. You got a lot of the staples which I think is smart because if they don’t end up keeping the deck they have a lot of really usable cards.

Only thing I might add are some early token generators 1/1s would work great with skull clamp. Could help the sac outlet to fodder ratios.

Any suggestions for the early token gen? I 100% agree. Especially since I’m running stuff like blood artist and other aristocrat pingers.

I was thinking maybe ophiomancer and bitterbloom bearer

Some cards I have in my Meren deck that I would recommend for are [[Rottenmouth Viper]], [[Primal Growth]], [[Teval's Judgement]] and the new [[Foggy Swamp Visions]]

Creature — Elemental Snake
As an additional cost to cast this spell, you may sacrifice any number of nonland permanents. This spell costs mana1 less to cast for each permanent sacrificed this way.
Whenever this creature enters or attacks, put a blight counter on it. Then for each blight counter on it, each opponent loses 4 life unless that player sacrifices a nonland permanent of their choice or discards a card.

Sorcery
As an additional cost to cast this spell, waterbend manax. (While paying a waterbend cost, you can tap your artifacts and creatures to help. Each one pays for mana1.)
Exile X target creature cards from graveyards. For each creature card exiled this way, create a token that's a copy of it. At the beginning of your next end step, sacrifice those tokens.

Rottenmouth will get a meren trigger through its additional cost and will help reduce board states for your opponents, Primal Growth will get your experience while ramping, Teval gets you additional benefit from reanimation and Swamp Visions with give a bunch of creatures to off for Meren while exiling opponents graveyards (Or from yours if you can't get experience up high enough)

Yeah those are really really solid cards for the deck. Swamp visions is actually kind of crazy. Will definitely be working these in. Appreciate the recommendations!

Yee, Ophiomancer was a good pick you suggested as well, [[Nine Lives Familiar]] is amazing for repeatable death triggers

Creature — Cat
This creature enters with eight revival counters on it if you cast it.
When this creature dies, if it had a revival counter on it, return it to the battlefield with one fewer revival counter on it at the beginning of the next end step.
Her master gathered the bones to resurrect her, only to find her purring on the altar.

Ok not only is that card insanely good here, but my friend is also obsessed with cats 😂 perfect

Finally, I would offer up [[Tormond, the Desecrator]] for some more creatures per reanimation, [[Shadowheart]] for card draw and experience triggers and [[Hogaak]] as an effective all rounder being death fodder, effectively free reanimation and a beatstick

Otherwise your deck is quite competent and I hope your friend appreciates it and you
