Hey everyone I’m new to magic and need help figuring out why my decks come out at like a PL4-5 maybe6 instead of my pods target of 7-8. I am new so I’m sure there’s lots of obvious things I’m missing but generally I try to make sure I get the staples, 34ish lands, card draw, removal, board wipes. My one thing may be I focus too much on my themes and I’m not sure how to not over do that. Here is an example of a deck I built yesterday really fast.

It’s comes in at like a 4 after taking out the dual lands to avoid pinging myself with burning land. The idea is to ping people and creatures but am I focusing that too much? Here is another deck that comes in at an 8.

My question is what’s the difference? What am I doing wrong? The one time I was able to hit an 8 was by scaling down a cedh deck and I want to be able to build my own.

So how are you judging power level?

#

yeah if youre like running it through some automated thing someone built, dont

#

power scale is mostly an arbitrary concept with no agreed upon hard lines

#

if you can play the deck in a pod with your group and feel like youre competing in the game and get wins sometimes, then thats all that matters

#

the first one looks like a solid list honestly, DEFINITELY not a 4 lmao

#

ive been playing a similar style of Ghyrson deck for almost a year now, check out my list and see if theres anything in there that you might want https://www.moxfield.com/decks/J6b30lhlMEKhqgq66kPumw

#

i will say youre definitely gonna want swiftfoot boots and lightning greaves to keep ghyrson in play

#

basilisk collar and gorgons head will turn all your removal and "deal 1 damage to each creature an opponent controls" into an asymmetrical wrath of god

#

[[rampaging ferocidon]] is good to punish people for going wide

and if you have ferocidon, chandra's incinerator, and a deathtouch equipment in play, you can completely lock out any creatures your opponents play. theyll all die immediately
