I've been wanting to give some more love to the underrated commanders in the format, and I decided to start with [[Iymrith, Desert Doom]]. He enjoys card draw and buffing himself, swinging and drawing cards.

This currently is a rough draft, so I'd appreciate any cuts and/or suggestions. I just tossed together some cards I think would work well, and will mold it from here.

[[Mind Over Matter]] seems like a must-run with this commander

Get rid of your hand to tap down blockers, maybe untap the commander and some lands and maximize the amount of card draw you get per swing

#

In general, I would look for some more discard outlets

#

Perhaps you could even look into a small graveyard subtheme. Run cards with flashback etc so you still have access to discarded cards.

#

Don't see why you would want to run Renari over just [[Vedalken Orrery]] or [[Leyline of Anticipation]]. Limitting your flash to just dragons seems kinda eh

Sounds good. In general, what cards should I cut?

#

And it was the Dragons and Artifacts

inner wharf
#

Sure, but the others are flash for everything

#

Leyline is straight up free sometimes

frail rover
#

Alright. What else do you think I should add?

inner wharf
#

Wondering if you really need to run stuff like Aqueus form and Bypass, your main attackers in this deck already have evasion

frail rover
#

It's mainly so that Iymrith can't be blocked

inner wharf
#

Yeah but he has flying already

frail rover
#

Most of the people I play against run a ton of flyers

Some of the cantrips like Ponder and Brainstorm are a bit eh here, as you're not really able to take full advantage of them. Ponder and Brainstorm shine the most when you have a fetchland as a follow up, or if your deck cares about topdeck manipulation.

frail rover
#

Besides, he's quite expensive. It's safe to expect that the others will have flyers on the board by the time I get him out

#

Alright, I'll cut those

inner wharf
#

brainstorm I think is ok as it can sometimes draw you into an answer in a pinch. Ponder is iffy if there's only 1 card among the top 3 you really care about

frail rover
#

Should I just drop the cantrips in favor of discard?

inner wharf
#

Maybe

#

The other thing is that outside of maybe Archmage Emeritus, your deck doesn't seem to care about casting cantrips

frail rover
#

[[Archmage Emeritus]]

Ah, yeah makes sense

inner wharf
#

So, yeah I do think you could just run better synergy pieces here

#

Or, just better draw spells

frail rover
#

Alright. So, correct me if I'm wrong.

Cut most cantrips/top-deck manipulation in favor of discard synergies, and add [[Mind over Matter]] and better flash enablers?

The discard stuff is mostly just an idea to maximize the potential of your commander's trigger. I do think Mind over matter is extremely good here, as you can pitch some cards before the trigger resolves to draw more cards, untap some lands and cast whatever you just drew into.

#

How much discard synergy you really need, idk. if you really commit to it, I think it could make for a really interesting and unique monoblue build

frail rover
#

Alright 👍

#

I'll look into some soft disc synergy, but ngl most of the cards to flashback just look bad

#

I'll probably put in creatures that give spells flashback

#

But I think I'm gonna go harder into Artifacts and Card Draw directly
