failed thread

~~In this thread, we post sketches and stuff, duh; but we also:
[1] analyzing technical details; such as proportion, measurement, and details.
[2] sharing visual references: such as hands, body, wardrobe, figure, and etc.
[3] discussing usage in writing: simply to talk about usage of illustration in writing, we are in a writing sever for a reason, you know why you are here.

Purpose of this thread is to get people discussing specifics and improving techniques. This is not a thread to simply showcasing your work, we have #story-arts-and-graphics for that.~~

3 sample references:
(not in English, but you can make it out from visual cues)

Very excited about this thread!

Does anyone else here really like folds in clothing? Their shapes and shading are very interesting to me

timid sun
#

Havent really reached the part for me to practice wardrobes and wears, but I can provide some references for clothes, any clothes in specific or just folds in general?

Though if my inputs or thoughts for me personally, yes I do have to focus on that since it adds up detail and makes thing more dynamic and add the 3D-like effect

Focused mostly on shape/structure however, shading references I do not have much

mild berry
#

That would be great!

#

I've found some nice videos on that topics, although they were for painting specifically

#

I'm sure @brisk harbor Could share some of her wisdom with us 👀

Cherrypicked 5 shirt cloth folding references, mostly for long-sleeve formal shirt but is kinda applicable to some other clothes to a degree

Though, it seems that one just need to visualize implied-triangles as fold rather than just lines by itself? i think

mild berry
#

Thank you!

#

The main advice I've read about is to simplify the folds into basic shapes

To contribute, these are kinda recent (some older recent, some newer recent) practices with shapes and applying shapes.

I still do get shape proportion or alignment with some inaccuracies though, like 90% accuracy (all “accuracy” is just an estimate) but been trying to aim at >95%, the 90% accuracy is quite notable with larger shape sketches.

I guess there is a reason why people hate drawing mechs or any highly geometric objects with a burning passion.

Any (reasonably) advanced shapes or combination of shapes, please suggest so maybe I could use it to practice,

tl;dr: 3D shapes can be quite demanding in accuracy and proportion

Nooo

#

Your shapes are great!

timid sun

Thanks but not really looking into praises (appreciated but not needed personally) ^^, kinda more into feedbacks on technical details or such

Or maybe it seems illustration as a craft hobby isnt so popular here, judging based on users here thonk

oof

I'm a little preoccupied with something, but I will share some things here for sure

#

So don't worry, I'm sure more people will come around

#

@timid sun Do you draw from life as well?

timid sun
#

Not yet on that phase, but I do take some photos now and then as future references, and will plan to use it for chapter 4 practice, as I go like shape>foreground>background>scene which scene will be combination of all

Ch5-8 (and ends at 8) will be for advanced stuff not related to objects specifically tho

mild berry
#

Oh you're going through a book?

#

It's good to take reference pics for later. I have too many to count at this point

timid sun
#

Not really, its more of self-planned "chapters" or topics, first half is more for objects creation and second half is more techniques specifically such as 1-3P perspective, foreshortening, 4-5P perspective, shading technique and etc

I dont plan to go too far though since these 8 should be enough for technically accurate sketches to be used in planned novel (if any)

mild berry
#

That's very organized. I've mainly been focusing on objects for now to get the values and proportions right

#

A recent study as an example

#

Still new to acrylics

#

Had a hard time blending colours and getting the right temperature for the more yellow shade

timid sun
#

Not sure if the top pic rim lighting is intentional or not but that sure does make the separation from shadow pretty clear and nice

And yeah, mixing colors is quite tricky based on past experience, not that I am good at it in the first place, the apple color looks like deep green than chatreuse which... looks like artificial candy apples if you get what I mean

Only if I knew bit more of traditional art, or at least the color mixing aspect, I tried to mix some color and it ends up brown. Can't comment much since I'm kinda oriented towards digital art and sketch/line centric, not much painting there

mild berry
#

The colour definitely is off as it should have had been leaning towards yellow. Knowing how to use the colour wheel can help with mixing colours, so I shall look into it more.

I'm better at digital art, and am using traditional mediums as learning tools, and so that I don't spend even more time on my computer.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Makes me want to study and practice more

# mild berry The colour definitely is off as it should have had been leaning towards yellow. ...

Try starting with yellow as a base, then when the yellow dries, add the other colors.

Mixing yellow with black also tends to make a certain shade of green, if you wanted to try that

In general, have another piece of scratch paper or similar on hand so you can check how colors and mixes/gradients/etc will look before you apply them to the paper/canvas :0

Lastly, in general, when trying for warm colors or a warmer look, try adding traditional fall colors: orange, yellow, red, brown. You don’t need to apply them across the whole piece, but if you can add a dab around the edges of highlights or shadows and fade it into the rest of the color, it tends to help a lot.

#

Also, keep track of what colors mix into what, even if you didn’t get the color you were initially going for! You never know when it’ll come in handy. Black in particular tends to mix into decidedly not the colors you wanted, so I like to avoid using it entirely except when I’m using pure black or when I know black is the only way to get the shade I’m thinking of.

How's the sketching going, everyone?
