I have a pair of DT 990 (not the X) and they've served me well, but I've noticed some limitations to them in terms of full-spectrum clarity. Not sure whether or not the 990 X or 1990 have similar issues, but they probably have a similar sound if they are being marketed as similar models.
I have been recommended the Sennheiser HD 6XX as the best in terms of clarity without spending truly ridiculous amounts of money. I've got those on my radar for when I can afford it.

They're very similar, but the slight differences in construction, as well as small variances between individual units, will cause them to sound maybe a little different.

So it's basically the same thing for a bit cheaper yeah.
