yes! so in the back of your mouth, there's this thing called the soft palate, which is the top, squishy part that can be moved to make your vocal placement to be less nasally
I think what your teacher means is that your voice sounds too bright and nasally, and you need to darken it up a bit
to have a wider tone, pretend you're yawning (helps to actually yawn) and then talk/sing that way
