I think it would be cool to be able to set up an exhaust system for the machines that you could funnel into primary trunks/chimneys.

This way you could make enclosed factory buildings and have them be several stories and actually have functioning smoke stakes that all the machines feed.

Right now none of the machines in my playthroughs are in buildings because I like to build as close to realistic as possible and it's nice to see the pollution that my progress brings lol.

cool idea. not sure it'll be feasible in the near term but you're right it'll be fun to play with. Until fluid pressure is a thing it's likely way out of scope though. Right now i foundation over top of the stacks and it stops smoke at all from going but custom smoke stacks could be cool.

Could give smoke stacks a pipe connection and run it to the bottom of the chimney decor block?

When I added a decor building around some of my machines, I immediately wanted something like this. I don't like seeing the smoke indoors 🚭

It could be kind of cool to have air pressure mechanics within a closed area. Similar to real world factory ventilation systems.

If exhaust could be piped then maybe in the future there could be exhaust filtration to reclaim particles from the exhaust for use in other recipes. A large component of exhaust in real life is carbon (soot) and carbon has a lot of uses in manufacturing. It's just not feasible to collect it for use in real life due to the costs vs volume obtained. But we don't have to worry about economics in the game.
