An older anime I heard about, that’s a sort of episodic dark comedy of sorts. Apparently it had a remake, though the remake I wasn’t as fond of.

The Laughing Salesman follows the adventures of a short supernatural salesman with a noteworthy toothy grin.

Every episode, he finds a person struggling with some sort of major personal problem of some sort, like maybe he’s struggling running a business or is having trouble with his love life, or something like that. Often the person he meets for the episode has a name that’s a pun on his current issue too.

The Laughing Salesman offers to help by selling them an enchanted trinket that will help remedy their issues. However he explains to them a strict list of rules on how to use it and what to do and not to do beforehand. His client buys his trinket and uses it to put their life back in order. While they do, the Laughing Salesman often watches.

Eventually their client screws up with the rules the Salesman told them beforehand for whatever reason. Once they do screw up, the magic item he sold them backfires and makes their personal problems 10 times worse, often with the Salesman appearing and mocking them for it. Then the Salesman goes out to find another victim client for the next episode.

It can be both funny and tragic at times, though not a series to watch if you want a story with a lot of continuity. Some episodes also played more into the supernatural nature of the Salesman. It’s a classic though.

If you do watch it, watch the original, not the remake.

One of the reasons why the remake wasn’t as good. In the remake, the repercussions of making a mistake with the magic trinket he sells them were not as severe and seems like they’d easily be able to recover.

Compared to the original where they get absolutely smited the moment they make a mistake with the enchanted item he sells them.
