Since people have been talking a lot about 86 recently, I wanted to mention this anime I've seen that is my one friend's favorite mecha anime, and 86 reminds me a lot of Blue Gender, except with rampant robots instead of giant insectoid aliens.
Blue Gender is about a guy named Yuji who gets infected by an unknown terminal disease, along with several others. With no known cure, the individuals with the disease, including Yuji, agree to be put into cryogenic stasis until a cure can one day be found.
However, things do not go as planned, as for several decades while being in stasis, an alien race of giant insects called The Blue invade the earth, devouring everything in their path. The humans fight back with giant mechs called Armor Shrikes, but soon the Blue have them outmatched and they overtake the Earth. Yuji is then prematurely awakened from Cryo Stasis, and now must team up with the other Armor Shrike pilots to escape the Earth and survive.
It's a very harsh Mecha Anime. A lot of characters die and it has parts where they do a lot of horrible things out of desperation. Yuji also ends up going from a relatively mild-mannered guy to a merciless pilot over the span of the series. It's not as well-known but it's definitely a great Mecha anime, and in a way, 86 is like a spiritual successor to it.
