In General: Group killer types into categories. Within each category, give each killer a difficulty grade that affects how likely they are to occur based on the game's difficulty setting.

  • Universal Modifier: +Stolen Murder Weapon: the killer stole their murder weapon instead of buying it, preventing sales records. Always stolen from either a matching shop, or a person the killer knows. The latter will generate a corresponding stolen item job. Increases difficulty by one grade. (V. Easy->Easy->Medium->Hard->V. Hard->Extreme).

Category 1: In Person Killers

  • Business Killer: Very Easy.
  • Cultist/Stalker/Generational: leave unchanged. Easy.
  • Revenge Seeker (New!): The questgiver for an infidelity or stolen item case figured out the culprit on their own, and lodged a rather direct complaint. Medium.
  • Competitor Killer: A business killer targeting competitors in the same type of business. Hard.
  • +Traceless: A modifier that removes the calling card, increasing difficulty by one Grade. There are no traceless cultists.

Category 2: Remote Killers:

  • Window Sniper: Very Easy.
  • Static Food Poisoner (new!): A restaurant employee starts feeding people poisoned food every once in a while. Will select targets that are different from them in either age or wealth/social class. Easy.
  • Rooftop Sniper: Medium.
  • Dynamic Sniper (new!): This sniper changes their shooting position each time, picking a target, then going to a location that has a clear line of fire on the target's residence, commute path, or workplace. Dynamic snipers will only shoot at the workplace if their target works on the upper floors, and never at factories. Target selection uses the same pool as a random in-person killer type, chosen randomly at killer selection. Very Hard.
  • Dynamic Food Poisoner (new!): The killer breaks into the homes of their targets to poison food items, which might go uneaten for days afterwards. NPC fridges are changed to also contain a fair amount of restaurant takeout. Very Hard.
  • +Tidy (snipers only): The sniper cleans up their shooting spot, not leaving items behind.

Category 3: Kidnappers

  • PLEASE fix them so the kidnapping actually happens, instead of the current contrivances. Maybe bait the victim into a secluded location with a phone call or something? Or drugging the victim with a syringe?
  • Released hostages now remember den locations they were at.
  • Current Kidnapper: V. Easy.
  • Patsy Kidnapper: Sends an unwitting schmuck to collect the ransom instead of going themselves. The patsy doesn't know the location of the kidnapper's nest, and only counts as a witness in terms of stuff they can tell you about the kidnapper. If the schmuck doesn't make it back to the kidnapper with the ransom money in time, the kidnapper kills their current victim and starts over. Medium.
  • Extortion Ring: The whole operation now includes three criminals: a kidnapper, a guard, and a mule. The mule takes the role of the patsy from a Patsy Kidnapper case, with the guard following behind during the ransom pickup. If the guard spots the player following the mule, the guard will attack: extortion ring guards are always armed with either a shotgun or a Faucon Rifle. When not doing a ransom pickup, the guard keeps watch over the hostage. The mule doesn't count as a crook in full for the purpose of case resolution, and a different mule will be used for each ransom pickup. The ransom note will say it's from "The [NAME] Firm"; talking to the city hall clerk about it will get you an updated case form with slots for multiple criminals, and a checkbox for arresting all involved perpetrators. Hard.
    • Dynamic: After releasing a hostage, the kidnappers relocate their den. Increases difficulty by one grade.
    • Double Dead-drop: Only for Patsy Kidnappers and Extortion Rings. Instead of directly handing the money to the kidnapper, the mule drops the briefcase off at another location for the kidnapper to collect. Increases difficulty by one grade.

Ok I think this is awesome. Feels like SoD needs a lot more evidence and criteria for victims. Maybe a phone book killer for another difficulty ranged case - they pick one person from the directory, kill them and then continue down the list until they’re caught. Maybe they burn the phone directory at the person’s residence or smth. And evidence in the killer’s home could be circled or crossed out names in their directory. They could also be any type of killer, a street sniper etc.
