Stuck at "Waiting to download..."

I'm eager to start modding but when I try to install mods via the ingame mod page the mods just get stuck at "waiting to downlaod", anyone know what might cause this and how to fix it?

This is a known issue with the "official game mods"

should be fixed once the devs release a patch

However, unofficial mods do work through thunderstore and using something like r2modman mod manager
