So right now, as much as I dearly love the game, the inventory system is very bare-bones and lacking.
If instead of a red screen with red icons, we could have a more "Tetris" style inventory, I think that would add a lot more depth to the inventory system itself and allow more Misc. items to be picked up/used.
What I mean by this: Look up the inventory for games like Diablo 1/2, or Path of Exile. So for example, an enforcer baton, could take up a 1x3 slot in your inventory, where as something smaller like an Eraser(if it were useful), could take up a 1x1 slot. 2x1 slot for Handcuffs, you get the idea.
This way, items you interact with, use, and/or pickup/drop, would have 'weight' to them, and feel more real, and give the player certain choices such as: "Do I carry my baton, body armor, & a few other things with me for this trip, or do I just bring a few meds and splints, just in case I screw up and get the crap beat out of me?"
This leaves the player with choosing to bring important items like handcuffs, food, meds, etc, while leaving behind bigger, more defensive/useful items, and so they need to make a choice.
You could go even one step further and add weight to each item, so you eventually cannot carry too much anyways, but I doubt many people would like that(I'd love it, but I also love changes that make the game harder/more challenging).
Either way, I think the inventory system needs an overhaul and needs to be more than just a red screen with same-y red icons.
