Chronicle of Vindex Ordus
From Firelight to Empire

Long before banners flew and empires bowed, there was only forest. Deep, wild, and unforgiving. Amid the twisted roots and misted glades, a single spark of civilization took hold—Gloomhaven.

It began with Exadonix, the visionary founder who laid the first stones of the settlement. Alongside him was MaJingRui, the Hand of Stone, the First Crafter, whose skilled hands shaped shelters from ruin and stone. Standing guard was their sworn brother, SnowRuii, a defender of unmatched resolve. Where Exadonix led, MaJingRui built, and SnowRuii protected. Together, they raised more than walls—they built trust, law, and kinship in a land that knew only silence.

As the haven grew, so did the ambition of its people. But it was not until the arrival of Swan, a wanderer touched by strange dreams and radiant vision, that the true course of destiny changed. Swan spoke not of survival—but of greatness. He saw beyond the treeline and the rising walls. He saw an empire where the fractured could unite, where strength served order, and where Gloomhaven could become something eternal.

Inspired and unsettled in equal measure, the founders listened. And they acted.

Outposts became citadels. The Deep Forest was tamed, not by blade alone, but by unity, labor, and vision. The tenets of the old haven—craft, kin, courage—were codified into law. Exadonix was named Imperator, first ruler of the rising empire. SnowRuii became High Marshal of the Kin Guard, Swan the Dream-Binder, advisor and flame of vision at the Emperor’s side, and MaJingRui, the Hand of Stone, oversaw the shaping of the empire’s foundation—its halls, keeps, and hearths—each a monument to endurance.

It was during this era that two outsiders, Larian, the Warden of Roads, and Sebelon, the Coinwright, arrived bearing trade and connection. With merchant caravans and road-builders in tow, they opened Gloomhaven to the wider world. Roads carved through the forest brought goods, stories, and allies, weaving Vindex Ordus into the fabric of distant lands. Their arrival transformed the empire from a fortress in the wilds to a thriving center of commerce and diplomacy.

Thus rose Vindex Ordus—The Protector’s Order. An empire forged not through bloodlust, but purpose. Its people remember the dark and the cold, and from that memory, they build brighter fires.

Even now, the heart of Vindex Ordus beats in the stones of old Gloomhaven.
And its founders are remembered not as rulers… but as kindlers of hope.
