I noticed that there are first-to-the-mill events for invites. Is it a large share of invites that goes out this way? I was hoping for a (fair) chance to win the lottery by just signing up.

There have only been two waves that included "first come first serve" (fcfs) invites. The fcfs invites were not the majority share in either wave that they were used in.
