It was assumed that the alpha test will begin at the end of this year. However, based on the latest news, we can conclude that the alpha may be slightly delayed.
To quote a recent post from the developers:

Last year we set a goal for ourselves to be ready for Alpha by the end of 2022, and just a few months ago it looked like it was an achievable target. Recently we’ve decided to go bigger with the changes that we want to make to core foundational aspects of the gameplay like the movement so that the Alpha is truly representative of where we want the game to be, so it’s looking like it’s going to take a little more time.
If the developers manage to do everything planned by the end of 2022, then maybe the game will go into alpha testing. Or maybe they won't finish. All changes need to be properly tested for defects, and then switched to the alpha version. I don’t know how many QA specialists they have in their team, but testing games is a long and difficult task.
