Well i believe each world will work as a chunk does in minecraft, each chunk, (however large it will be) will be supported by a server, and as the devs said, walking into a new chunk/server will be seamless and as smooth as possible, to give the impression of one large single server world.
calling it now, 5 second jitter when moving between server on alpha release, you heard it here first
yeah, there will be lag when going in between the servers

All i can imagine from your description is talking past a tree and all of a sudden being on 180 ping, like you've walked too far from the wifi
