From what has been said, it would seem that spawns are spread out, with some system for starting near friends.

Also, it's one map and as I understand, it doesn't get wipes in constant intervals. If all people would spawn at a central hub, new people would have to wander all the way to the outer rim of civilization. I hate this when joinig on old minecraft servers.
