Dragonclaws Faction Steam Link

The Dragonclaws Faction mod intends to flip the script. When the mod is completed, it'll ultimately include the ability for the claw having dragonkin beavers to dig shallow trenches to reroute water. They'll purposefully allow crops to dry out prior to harvesting before re-irrigating the fields once again.

Early in their adventure, they'll dig homes into cliff faces using rudimentary supports, but later they'll build high in the skies. This is a faction focused on the concepts of both dragon fire and dragon flight. They like mountains, canyons, and heat.

Instead of wet fur, Dragonclaw beavers like warmth, and require Charcoal Braziers to warm their colonies. Instead of playing around at the local Lido, these beavers slowly bake their scales in the sun. Instead of ziplining or tubing around, they'll soar through the skies to travel directly from their homes to their work stations.

Note
This is still a work in progress, but had to get it up before the end of the contest. I'm no artist, but I'll be learning how to utilize blender to build custom buildings, plants, trees, etc... for the Dragonclaws. I'll also be working on animations, since I plan to introduce a gliding mechanic that works differently from the ziplines. Currently costs and research are at a minimal for testing. This is my first mod on Timberborn, and I might not have attempted it if not for now inspired I got when I thought of the Dragonclaws. Timberborn is an amazing game, and I want to make these beavers come to life.

Requires the ladder mod.

Implemented: Cavern House, Dragonclaw Nest, Climbing Wall (ladder, provides climbing fun well being), Recreational Climbing Wall, Warmth need replacing Wet Fur, Charcoal Brazier, Tempered Scales and Sun Baking Yard, Claw Treadle (power wheel alternative), Charcoal Kiln, Steam Engine uses Charcoal instead of Logs, Fiber Mill, Shoring Kit Workshop, Chili Infused Canola Oil, Sweet and Spicy Fried Potatoes, Ashroot crop, Sweet Potato crop, Pepper crop, Hearth Fryer, 2 worker scavenger post for scrap metal.

Plans: Full unique buildset instead of recycled models. Trenching mechanic that allows digging 1 deep early game. Crops that require drying out purposefully to harvest. Gliding fast travel where beavers can glide down from take-off stations or their own houses to reach their worksites. Powered elevator for quick, vertical traversal. Cavern housing will eventually be more than 1 tile large, have its own building, and be placeable only in cliff faces. Unique Dragonclaw beaver model.

you added an elevator!
I gotta try!

light wadi
#

your missing carrot option in the farmhouse

#

@gleaming junco

light wadi
#

so cant plant carrots

#

was hoping theyd do it after ashroot but they refused

dire anvil
#

Wow, very curious about this one!

#

Can you post some screenshots?

light wadi
#

not much to see tbh, looks like its just the same buildings renamed

#

i just started

dire anvil
#

Ah

light wadi
#

is a mix of both buildings

dire anvil
#

I'll put it on my watchlist then. It sounds like a fun concept

light wadi
#

ziplines are called gliders

dire anvil
#

I guess it'll require quite a bit of custom modelling to make it come to life and live up to its lore

light wadi
#

yeah ..looks like a first step

dire anvil
#

Hahah that's good. Take a zipline, remove the zipline, what do you have? A glider!

light wadi
#

oh..no bots

dire anvil
#

Maybe they'll be replaced with dragons

gleaming junco
gleaming junco
# light wadi you added an elevator! I gotta try!

I plan to, I like the idea of them gliding from their house, and then elevating up at the end of the day, requiring planning to send power to the elevators. It'll probably be like a bucket system so it can constantly move and they hop in a bucket to fetch a ride.

gleaming junco
# light wadi ziplines are called gliders

Yeah, for now I just renamed the building. I think gliders might have more freedom than Ziplines, but I'm not sure. It'll definitely take custom code.

I'm thinking of trying a hot air updraft building that gives them a boost of height if they glide over it.

gleaming junco
#

Thanks for the feedback, I'm glad people are interested in the concept! Probably not enough to place in the contest, but I'd really like to make this mod come to life. 🦫

light wadi
#

i just saw it said carrots was a crop

#

so naturally i tried planting them

gleaming junco
light wadi
#

id imagine its a bit of work

#

seems like key core stuff is there

#

at least its playable

gleaming junco
#

There's like, tutorial requirements that kept crashing the game, so I needed stuff to exist for references there. I'm wondering what other faction modders have done for that.

light wadi
#

i cant remember if theres a tutorial on the other mod factions...I think one has it.....

gleaming junco
light wadi
#

i have been wanting an elevator of some kind since the start...and yeah like a ferris wheel sort of elevator

gleaming junco
#

Yeah, I almost described it like a ferris wheel.

light wadi
#

i had asked for info on how to play a mod faction and they said play the tutorial...I hadnt even considered theyd make one for it

#

more like one of those zipper rides

gleaming junco
#

The climbing wall ladder variant will slow down beavers when they travel through it, but give the climbing well being bonus. The elevator will be a speedy way to traverse vertically.

gleaming junco
light wadi
#

this but just vertical

gleaming junco
#

Yeah

light wadi
gleaming junco
#

Yeah, it'll probably look similar to that

light wadi
#

sweet!

gleaming junco
#

Some wooden buckets circling around

#

Connected to the power network

light wadi
#

or just swinging chairs like skilifts

gleaming junco
#

I also want to require warmth for the nests to work, but I'm sure that takes custom code.

light wadi
#

good luck

gleaming junco
#

Yeah, lucky for me, Timberborn uses C#, and I know C#.

#

The modelling will be the hard part 😅

light wadi
#

thats good there was a modder named Zandy that was working on a robotic/tech faction, they gave up over the bugs they couldnt solve

gleaming junco
#

But I wonder if I can reuse or modify the wind tunnel animation, and add a glider. There's a lot of good animations that already exist.

light wadi
#

yeah

gleaming junco
#

Well, I'm glad you like the idea! I know it's not much right now, but when the idea popped in my head, I just had to try.

light wadi
#

looking forward to em

#

this mod contest doubled the amount of mod factions

gleaming junco
#

I also want to see if there's a different way to handle scrap scavenging if they'll use scrap earlier. I have a 2 beaver version and have removed the science cost of the first one, but not so certain at the moment.

I've also considered making like 3 maps someday specifically for them.

light wadi
#

i have map ideas but no patience

gleaming junco
gleaming junco
light wadi
#

id always heard the mod factions were problematic

#

performance wise so never bothered

#

theyve come a long way in a year

gleaming junco
light wadi
#

thats what I hear

#

bobs working on wonders for his, you planning one...or too ambitious at this time

#

its kinda early

#

and hes had leafcoats for a while

gleaming junco
#

I plan for it to be a full faction that approaches the game a bit differently, and highlights the vertical nature of building and water control.

#

Also, a giant dragon statue would be cool 😎

light wadi
#

you are speaking my language today

gleaming junco
#

Lol

light wadi
#

thats the parts i like

#

vertical byuilding and the water control

#

please make every building stack!

gleaming junco
#

Maybe a treasure horde where shiny hooman things are collected and gathered to. Maybe not literally, but could be a pile of random stuff, not even treasure, but like a shiny bike, etc...

light wadi
#

i love how so many of the building in the leafcoats stack

gleaming junco
light wadi
#

but I need em all to stack

#

and fyi i dislike the rooftop terrace cuz has to be on rooftop

#

I wanna make em balconies

#

and they stop vertical stacking

gleaming junco
#

I noticed with another mod I use that I can place platforms over different sizes piles, but not the base game piles. I wonder if I could utilize something like that, so you could upgrade every building to stackable with platforms

gleaming junco
gleaming junco
# light wadi I wanna make em balconies

You've inspired me.

I'm gonna be adding tea 🍵

I'm thinking of different social activity replacements for a rooftop terrace, and since these are dragon themed beavers, there'll probably be a direct replacement of some sort, like a cliff side lounge or something, or something to do with roosting.

But I also thought of a replacement for the campfire, a sauna inspired hangout that requires water, charcoal, and tea leaves. I can also use tea leaves to make medicine, and make tea drinks, replacing dandelions.

#

Sometimes saunas use herbs and such. Tea can have a lot of uses, and I like the idea of an alternative drink to water, and with it being based on warmth.

light wadi
#

smoking lounge

gleaming junco
#

The sauna wouldn't require being built on ground and can be built on top of

light wadi
#

im a big tea driker

gleaming junco
light wadi
#

combine a smoking lounge with the dispensary mod

#

lol

gleaming junco
#

Yeah, hemp was a possibility, but I went with the basswood tree instead to make fibers.

#

Basswood is apparently a lime tree, but like trees don't grow limes, limes come from a different type of plant...

light wadi
#

just make it green if you do it teh dispo mod just copies wheat

gleaming junco
#

But maybe I can add limes

light wadi
#

ooh limes

gleaming junco
gleaming junco
light wadi
#

lol, add vitamin deficency illnesses

#

id like to see some different injuries with specific healing times

gleaming junco
#

lmao

light wadi
#

and potions/medicines

gleaming junco
#

Yeah, that's an interesting idea, there's not many in the game right now.

light wadi
#

maybe even tinctures to delay effects

gleaming junco
#

I was thinking tea leaves and extract for medicine, not sure though. But, I could potentially remove paper with having fibers instead.

light wadi
#

one drink sates hunger longer,,,

gleaming junco
#

I'd probably figure out what types of injuries are possible and make sense

gleaming junco
#

Like one that eliminates the need to sleep, more time to spend on activities

light wadi
#

another prevents work injuries/etc..

#

ooh yeah

gleaming junco
#

The other faction idea I had was one that incorporated magic

#

Like a wizard beaver

light wadi
#

thatd be cool too

gleaming junco
#

I went with dragons for now, a little more grounded, albeit very fantastical

#

But yeah, lumberpunk aesthetic with magic, sorta like how steampunk is combined with magic

light wadi
#

no ones used solar panels for power yet...

unborn jolt
light wadi
#

do they?

#

i didnt get far into em

gleaming junco
#

I've been thinking of alternative and themed ways to generate power. Maybe thermal solar, the type where you use the heat from the sun. (Boiling water or something, could replace the steam engine).

#

I think in real life they hear up molten salt and that way the heat lasts throughout the night. Tons of mirrors directing the sun.

#

But idk if beavers could make mirrors that efficiently.

light wadi
#

water reflects light

#

and they do make metal steel

#

it could be polished

#

to reflect light

#

and yeah they do use a salt/brine like solution

gleaming junco
#

Hmm, do we need salt mines

light wadi
#

i put salt on all my food

gleaming junco
#

Probably, honestly, look into how salt is harvested from brine deposits or rivers, etc...

light wadi
#

and is a key nutrient

gleaming junco
#

True

#

Electrolytes

light wadi

its responsible for our nervous system

gleaming junco
light wadi
#

true

#

just melted sand

#

well lil more

gleaming junco

Yeah

#

Lol

light wadi
#

they do have windows...

gleaming junco
#

True true

#

Crafty beavers

light wadi
#

ok...stacking mods on

#

see what it can handle!

gleaming junco
#

Good luck! I've been working on it yesterday and today, no updates yet, but cleaning up some stuff, like the carrots and duplicate buildings.

Working on some custom icons since I realized it's confusing when Bark has the same icon as Logs when both can be used as recipes to make fiber. Since fibers are used for the 'nest', I needed a way to the player to get them faster than growing basswood trees. Was also looking into the possibility of a drying rack that can dry things passively, like tea leaves, without a worker beaver. I think that'll take C#, though.

light wadi
#

so far its handled all the qol mods fine

#

it does still list carrots as a plantable crop

gleaming junco
#

Alright, update is published. Nothing crazy is different, just cleaned up a lot of stuff.

#

Peppers Icon

gleaming junco
#

Not published yet, but I've got a working system for solar energy utilizing molten salt. Without needing to dive into coding anything new, I managed a salt mine that can be placed anywhere for now. Beavers harvest salt, which can be routed to a molten salt heating solar array. That Converts the salt into molten salt. There's an underground storage building for storing only the molten salt, but it can also be sent to a steam engine made specifically for the molten salt.

Mine > Solar Array > Storage/Thermal Salt Engine

I'm not entirely sure what the best way to get salt will be, since I don't think I can really put salt deposits on existing maps. Desalination facilities that gather it from water don't make too much sense, either. Maybe it could be be a salt works that harvests it from water or even bad water. Bad water might honestly make the most sense.

lapis condor
#

wow u did what i couldnt!

gleaming junco
lapis condor
gleaming junco
#

Ahh, okay.

Yeah, it's a lot of work, but the devs give us a lot of tools to work with.

lapis condor
#

Like didn't use tools

gleaming junco
#

Yeah, old school modding

#

They give us example mods and stuff now, it's fairly easy to add new things.

lapis condor
#

So I took leaf coats and recolored assets with scripts and modified the logic to be about skyscrapers and all

gleaming junco
#

That's pretty cool. I still need to get into making custom assets.

gleaming junco
#

rip

#

only one I got so far is the pepper icon

lapis condor
#

I'm currently trying to make genshin mods

gleaming junco

but it's a good start to getting all the other icons done

viral raptor
#

Also with the faction enabled it changes the IronTeeth Steam Engine to take charcoal. It should either be a separate building (rename the blueprint and update the template collections), or added as a faction blueprint modifier.

light wadi
viral raptor
#

ahh, but does it actually require the Ladder mod, or is that just a courtesy to the Ladder mod author?

gleaming junco
gleaming junco
gleaming junco

Updated with the fix for the ironteeth steam engine.

It'll also have the molten salt thermal engine, solar array, storage, etc... for testing.

viral raptor

timbertrees does its own custom parsing of the blueprints, so it doesn't care about mod dependencies in the same way as the game. I end up listing them explicitly.

gleaming junco

gleaming junco

There's no compiled code for my mod, so if you've subscribed to it, you can see all of the JSON files in your steam workshop cloud folder.
These are usually located here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\1062090\3730392778

gleaming junco

The faction isn't finished, so I haven't touched the monument stuff yet. It has some mix of ironteeth and folktale stuff since I started the mod originally as just modified folktales and later tried swapping to modified ironteeth until I can replace all of the vanilla faction stuff.

lapis condor
gleaming junco
#

Uh... yeah, there's a vanilla resources folder that has everything that you can get.

lapis condor

i just got these guys breeding and starting to expand the colony

#

the breeding pods use wood and fabric and take a lil while to get going

gleaming junco
#

Yeah, it's not easy, I'm wondering if I can make them live a little longer or not. Right now, the plan is for the kids to hatch 50% of the way to adulthood. Not too sure how to make them functionally different than other factions or if it's necessary to.

There is a less efficient fiber recipe before you're processing basswood bark to help start nesting earlier.

I also attempted to set the pods up to require less frequent resource deposits compared to the Ironteeth pod so that beavers spend less time keeping them full.

light wadi
light wadi
# gleaming junco Yeah, it's not easy, I'm wondering if I can make them live a little longer or no...

I first tried doing basswood bark to fiber but I kept dying
then this time I went right to unlocking the workshope and making the fiber out of logs and was able to get births before they started dying off and a lil creative building control was able toget it going...I am playing on easy tho. One thing I didnt realize early like the other normal factions is you dont need a lot of water/food when you start

#

now that I know those buildings arent needed till a lil later, I think I can get em going quicker

gleaming junco
light wadi
gleaming junco

Climbing wall is a ladder, like a staircase

gleaming junco

Recreational wall will end up being a larger social activity building, but it's to get the need during downtime.

been using it that way and see climbing is a well being stat

With automation, I think controlling population with breeding pods should be easier

gleaming junco

i cant wait to unlock the automation stuff to start setting em up

gleaming junco
#

Mods that modify existing things, you might not see that for Dragonclaws if the faction uses a separate object in the code

gleaming junco
#

I definitely wanna explore adding more automation tools someday

light wadi
#

yeah ran into that on others, i add 1 mod at a time to see if its all good

gleaming junco

ive suggested a motion sensor, cuz I wanted to set up a map with a lot of rivers, using the rafts mod with multiple docks and raft shipping routes, and have motion sensors set off lights alng the routes to visually track the rafts

Maybe that could be your first foray into modding?

light wadi

the breeding pods turning into egg nests and more in cliff houses ( not requireing end game mats )

light wadi

I like being able to put the cavern houses inside the cliffs. Id like to see more buildings you can do that with

#

and make the rooftop balconies cliffside

i could see having a whole cliffside settlement with tubes linking em thru the ground

gleaming junco
gleaming junco
# pale dew they should be half beaver, so fur with scales, sumthing like dark brownfur with...

The images at the top of this post are a rough idea of what I'm aiming for. I would like they to have different colors, not sure if they're going to be super colorful, but maybe some mild hues thrown in. Basically scales around the 'top' sides of their backs, shoulders, and arms, with fur on the under sides. Went with scaly beaver tails and wing nubs (like a vestigial organ). They'll use gliders as their fast travel, I want them to glide from their houses at the start of the day, so investigating if that's possible. It's gonna be similar to ziplines, but hopefully they don't need an 'exit' location, like a landing zone, and can land anywhere. We'll see.

pale dew
#

i wonder if the scales could be made compatable with bobbings name mod that adds colored beavers, if the scales are addons like a hat they can be placed on every beaver

gleaming junco
#

Yeah, not sure. At the moment the plan is to make a custom beaver model with a custom texture to get the look right. They'll need large claws afterall. Then maybe I investigate how they animate, since I'd like them to use the claws when cutting down trees and harvesting crops and whatnot.

#

Might start with custom textures.

pale dew
#

i think lone.faerie can help with animations, saw him messing with them in #🤖mod-creators

#

tho maybe hes new to them also

gleaming junco
#

Yeah, saw that too. We'll see when we get there. Focus right now is just figuring out what the unique buildings will be and all that before I get into custom assets. I'll probably get unique icons first, like the chili icon. Helps reduce confusion.

lapis condor
gleaming junco
#

One plan for this mod is to include a few maps that are tuned to be more engaging for the dragonclaws.

light wadi
#

thatd be nice

light wadi
#

ooh, doing a lil googling
watercress needs moving water

#

and Cypress is a good water tree that grows bigger than oak

#

and has natural rot rsistance

light wadi
#

the wind turbine requires paper but i dont see a way to make it

gleaming junco
light wadi
#

i figured thats what it was

gleaming junco
# light wadi ooh, doing a lil googling watercress needs moving water

Yeah, watercress is something I considered. I'm not 100% sure if I'll do an aquatic plant or not. There might be another way to utilize water, like salt mining from bad water, but not sure about good water. Most of their theme is around drying things out, so aquatic plants run counter to that.

I like the tree idea, though, it might be a good way to get enough logs to fuel the charcoal kilns.

light wadi
#

ill check em all today and make sure all buildings are buildable

#

i was reading about a gum tree

gleaming junco
#

Yeah, I think wind power works well with the dragonclaw theme, so I'll probably include it in some way. I haven't gotten around to replacing everything, so some stuff is left there so they're playable

light wadi
#

and thought a gum they chewed and got a well being bonus might be neat

gleaming junco
#

I wonder if I can replace birch with basswood or not. Like, if maps with birch trees would swap to basswood if I could overwrite somehow.

gleaming junco
# light wadi thatd be nice

Yeah, I'll have to think of more reasons for them to build into cliffs and figure out how to make larger than 1x1 structures do it.

I already plan on a gem mine or something. It'll be the source of mirror making material for the solar array

light wadi
#

theres a mod for the Dirtyclaws that adds gold and other minerals to mine

#

and can be used/added with any map/game save supposedly

gleaming junco
#

I'd like the idea of a cliff balcony thing that can hang underneath overhanging terrain or other buildings. Gonna have to see if it's possible, it's sorta a reverse of building on top of solid structures, it's like building underneath them.

gleaming junco
#

Dragonclaws aren't tunnelers, but they like mountains and building upwards.

light wadi
#

no bots on these guys?

gleaming junco
#

Eventually I'll do something for that.

#

Heck, what if it wasn't bots

#

What if it was dragon whelps

#

Or something

light wadi
#

trying to think what else

gleaming junco
#

Yeah

light wadi
#

golems

gleaming junco
light wadi
#

mud/clay/molten salt

gleaming junco
#

That way farmers can deposit it at the base of a mountain, and industry workers can access and eat dinner at the top

light wadi
#

ooh thats interesting

gleaming junco
#

If it was something like a dragon whelp, they could use the gems as their fuel

light wadi
#

bob duplicated the tubeways for buildings for the leafcoats, is there a way to do that with ziplines?

gleaming junco
#

Probably

#

My Ziplines are just renamed duplications

#

For a warehouse lift thing, it'd likely need multiple entrances and flexible height

gleaming junco
#

Couldn't find a good example of what I'm picturing on Google, this is sorta close, but basically similar to the beavers, they could hatch from eggs. Now, I'm not sure where the eggs come from... Maybe dragons are real and the beavers provide a tribute for it to roost and lay an egg for them, idk, but fueling the whelps with gems might be cool, and gives another sue for gems.

Not a final decision by any means, just brainstorming.

gleaming junco
light wadi
#

too cute...i might feel a lil bad killing em all
