#Build-a-Map Contest 4 is live!

The goal of the contest is simple. You need to create an original, playable, and pretty map that makes good use of Update 6 features. As always, thatโ€™s open to your interpretation. Whether you stack layers of water thanks to 3D water physics, expand the initial verticality with Natural Overhangs, prepare extra flexible start options, or do something entirely different - itโ€™s up to you.

The only formal requirement is that the map features at least one Natural Overhang of any size.

Once finished, add a description to your map and back it up with at least three screenshots, including one showing the entire map. This helps both us and the other players who will check out your creation.

Feel free to use this thread to discuss the new contest.

GL HF!

Folks, I want to point out that we've added a clarification about the eligibility of your maps to both the FAQ and the Terms and Conditions.

In the FAQ, the updated paragraph now reads:

Create a new (= not published anywhere before November 29, 2024) map using Timberborn's built-in map editor.

In the T&Cs, we've added a new point:

(The map needs to:)

3.3.2. Be published for the first time on or after November 29, 2024.

This requirement is basically the same as in the previous editions, meaning we don't accept maps published before the contest started. At the same time, now that Steam Workshop is live, it doesn't force exclusivity. So if you, for example, post a cool new map on Steam Workshop on December 3, 2024, and THEN a day later you learn about the contest being live and publish that same map on Mod.io on December 5, that still counts.

wanton geyser
#

Which sucks for me, because I published one just before the contest started, that meets all the other requirements!
I do get it though.

The FAQ also answered a few of my other questions.

Is there a way to increase the height of the map beyind 16? It looks like there are some maps that are taller

sturdy yarrow
#

Not without mods, you can increase the height with overhangs but the normal terrain can only go up to 16

round iron
#

Speaking of which, I've clarified this in the #๐Ÿ”ฅcontest-rules:

โ“ Can I submit a map that requires mods to work (i.e. the map height mod)?
No, your map needs to load and fully work on the vanilla game. For example, a modded map with parts of terrain reaching a few tiles over the default map editor limit could load fine - but, at the same time, it wouldn't allow the player to freely add extra terrain tiles to the extent regular maps do. That's not okay.

Below are links to my entry for the competition. Feel free to play it and comment on the Workshop, Mod.io, or here if you have suggestions. It has some hidden gems.

mod.io

Map developed for Timberborn's "Build-a-Map Contest 4" - Uses many overhangs and a few levels of water. Includes multiple viable starting areas including a secret difficult location.

#

It is my first map. So... be ruthless. How else can I get better?

#

For what I mean is, is it ok to use mods to go past the 256x256 limit, as long you do not go past the 16 tiles high?

round iron
#

Yes, that's the main exception allowed. Hence the 256x256 and larger size category.

Since the contest is about U6, how important is it for contest maps to have good advanced start spots?

round iron
# late minnow Since the contest is about U6, how important is it for contest maps to have good...

Making good use of U6 is one of the four main criteria.

โ“ Can you be more specific about the Update 6 criteria?
To be eligible, your map must have at least one Natural Overhang of any size. Other than that, itโ€™s up to you. Whether you stack layers of water thanks to 3D water physics, expand the initial verticality with Natural Overhangs, prepare extra flexible start options, or do something entirely different - you decide what to focus on. Use the description field to explain what you did.

late minnow
#

Thanks for the reminder, I read too fast apparently DamFT

#

You might not be able to answer this one, but does the jury open the maps in game to see for themselves or should we only rely on the description and pictures?

do I have to link my submission anywhere?

wanton geyser

Kinda neglected the multiple start areas of this one though.

late minnow
#

When is the exact deadline for submissions? The post says "by 29 December", does this mean 28 December 23h59? Also, if I already submitted my map, I presume I can't push an update after the deadline?

#

(context: my map is already uploaded, I want to push a last update but I can't before 29 December precisely)

When uploading to mod.io, there are two questions at the end I don't know how to answer. For "mod type" do I select "other"? It's already a "map" based on a prior tag question.

#

The last question, about this being official or unofficial pipeline . . . I would assume "unofficial" because I'm not official?

Does one need to do anything to the map one created to make this make sense? I think there are other places one could start on the map I made.

You then get an end screen like this:

#

I've been thinking of Timberborn as the infinite sandbox game and now I learn there sort of is a win condition now

#

lol

wanton geyser
#

Yeah, it's new

#

Win conditions used to be whatever you wanted it to be, so I often went with "Achieve max wellbeing". but now the Wonder is.

However, just because you do it, doesn't mean you have to end, it's like launching a rocket in Factorio. It gives you a score screen, but that's not the end of the game. (In Factorio, it actually opens up the final research tiers)

near sable
#

Cool. I've added some features consistent with the theme of my map to make other starting options more appealing and viable.

#

Any idea how to decide whether my map is hard or medium? I've played on an earlier version of it, and so has my husband. We felt it was certainly harder than most maps. But is it really "hard" or is it medium?

late goblet

regardless, my map is finally complete and ready for viewing/playing.
It tells somewhat of a story, of ancient civilizations transforming the land itself to suit their needs, and of what happens when such an artificial landscape falls into disrepair.

wanton geyser

People having fun is the goal of these things, so in that regard, we're all winners.

That goes for both the people making the maps, and the people playing on them.

Actually winning the contest is a bonus.
