The crystal clear river in the open plains seemed like the perfect place to settle... until the badtides wash through.
Shallow Flats is a 256x256 open plains map, where any water management has to be done very carefully. Badtides are difficult to manage as there's no easy alternate route for awhile!
-Multiple directions to build in from the start
-Easy start, but difficult mid-game
-Badtides are very punishing: Any alternate path for badtides takes some time to construct, so they will hit hard
-Large sections of flat ground provide a unique challenge for using the land
-2 Underground Ruins protected by badwater
This map uses lots of dry, flat ground that is difficult to irrigate. One issue in base game maps is that dynamite is rarely "needed": I wanted players to have to use dynamite or other tactics to actually make the further reaches of the map usable. Even when the more obvious dry rivers are broken open there's still a LOT of land that is completely dry, providing a blank canvas.
The map is roughly broken into half and each can be managed separately. There's enough hills poking up that there's still plenty of usable land if an entire half is submerged (which requires very few floodgates intentionally.)
Please let me know what you think!
