Hypixel recommends using a variant of 1.8, most people use 1.8.9 as the safest version of Minecraft released under 1.8 however you can use 1.8-1.8.9 as they're almost entirely the same. Just minor bug and security patches which don't effect the core protocol.

Hypixel utilizes Spigot 1.8.8 not 1.9+ unsure about Skyblock I remember them saying something in their devlog that hygot would be put to a newer version

When the game(bedwars) gets updated, the version becomes differenent

the version 1.9 is useless, no one plays it, and if y ou are gonna sya "b-b--b-bu-but MoOdErN PvpPp" no modern pvp server allows 1.9 players to join.

the only version that is supported in all modern pvp servers is 1.21
